Exactly. Wasn't it President Clinton who started the 5 years and no more welfare thing?

Five years??? Really? Well, someone better get on this crap, and stop the bleeding. [Sad!]

P.S. It was said when I was a young "worker bee" in the 60's & 70's (for someone else), by the time you are of age to receive SS, there will be none. Guess so. Another UGH! Still working my tail off to provide for mo'opuna and ohana, with NO "assistance" from any bloody entity. Maybe taking SS now, at a reduced rate is wiser; instead of leaving it with the government who chooses to spend it otherwise. AUWE!

They still do! "Quest" is the equivalent of Medicaid in Hawaii. If you qualify for EBT (food stamps) you probably get free medical care. You would also get free school bus transportation, free school breakfast AND lunches for the kids (on top of the EBT benefits...

For the love of God, you're right.

First, the keiki need to be fed at school, since we have the highest percentage of keiki who are in need on this island. (*Check our Pahoa and Keaau statistics). I have no problem feeding our keiki. However, when the parents are not making any effort whatsoever, to work towards a better life, (like get a job, work for a living, earn your keep, etc.) WTH???!!!

OK, pau. (Not really, pau, but can't do a damn thing about it, except commiserate, and continue to encourage our youth.)

God help us all.

I have never received welfare or ebt in my life, but I'm glad it's available for those that need it, especially since much of it goes to feeding keiki.

I'd rather our taxes go to help our own neighbors rather than giving it away to foreign countries. We're giving Benjamin Netanyahu $3.1 Billion this year for no reason whatsoever of over $120 Billion to Israel cash give away. We're giving Pakistan almost $1 Billion this year.

http://beta.foreignassistance.gov

The US spends about $75 Billion on food stamps and $600 Billion on Military every year. The U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will cost taxpayers $4 trillion to $6 trillion.

This is where we need to tighten our belt and start investing in our own country.

That was Jimmy Carter's doing, and it won him the Euro-chicken award. I like spider-dude's the plan in movie "Wild Wild West" ... give everything in the US back!
***Still can't figure out how to spell 'car' correctly***

Back to the original topic:

If someone puts into Social Security all their working life, then even if they move to another country they will still get their benefits. I know Sicilians who moved back to the old country after retiring, because the cost of living was lower and they could live better on their fixed income. So if Hawaii were to regain it's sovereignty, the situation would be the same, because Social Security is a contract between the government and the worker: in a nutshell, you put the money in when you're working so that you can take it out once you retire. No need raise bugaboos to scare people about supporting sovereignty. That question is not relevant.

Social security is not welfare.

What Rene Siracusa says is true as far as it goes, but Social Security is NOT the same at EBT, Section 8, WIC, and direct financial welfare payments. Those types of welfare spending are heavily subsidized by the Feds in the form of grants to the states. Depending on what sort of sovereignty, if any, is attained, that second group of benefits could easily be lost. The US government is not required to pay those to residents of foreign countries, which is what Hawaii would become if the most radical sovereignty advocates get their way.

This is all probably moot, however, since the sovereignty folks don't appear to be even close to agreeing on a plan that has a chance of working.

i'm thinking after we decide what form of government or kingdom we are going to replace our existing State of Hawaii with and how S.S. payments and EBT will fit into the picture, we really ought to get on to the subject of what kind of internet service will be provided for our Kingdom of Hawaii/Puna - Mars colony branch. will there be a high-speed connection? will i be able to set up an auto-pay system for my Bank of the Hawaii Kingdom Martian mortgage? these are all very good questions.

would you rather they just go to malama market and steal it?

Welfare and foodstamps are provided...because, we don't have enough jail space nor cops resources and time to go processes all that paperwork for the poor and hungry.

I'm sure I could probably qualify for something, but as long as I feel I don't have to I'll just keep going till that time comes. Hopefully not.

I was also thinking about getting early retirement.
