Bullwinkle, i think you may have misread "libertarian" as "liberal". libertarianism is most basically defined as promoting individual liberty and minimized government. there are both left and right versions on the spectrum. but as you say, and as i was also referring to, libertarianism in the US these day is mostly identified with the radical Tea Party conservative brand.
this whole thread has veered off into the uglier side of national politics, but oh well.

No slight intended, just venting ....I'm just old, and so tired of all the lectures from folks who want to impose their world view stories and presumptions, and wont pick up the dinner check, preach morality while grabbing your privates....
Ive had a bad week - got groped on the way back on the united flight ...by a 300lb jesus freak .....my week went down hill from there that exit row reclining turned out not to be an upgrade......
so happy to be home

That isn't the point and you know it. There is a vast entitlement mentality here. There is also a vast amount of fraud in the system. Sit outside Malama or Island Naturals and ask people if they want to sell any of their benefits off the EBT card. Going rate is 40-50% on the dollar. You get $100 of EBT and you pay them $40-$50 in cash. You get a nice discount on your purchase and they get cash to buy alcohol/drugs/cigarettes.
40-50%? Wow! The sellers are doing a great business here. Most places it's 20-30ยข on the dollar.

Why would they? Plenty of other non-citizens of the U.S. get them....
I must have been sleeping when I first read this. Non-citizens get welfare when the live in the USA. If Hawaii becomes a "Sovereign State" it would be a foreign country. Why would welfare programs continue?

It does make the sovereignty movement sound juvenile; "You're not the boss of me! Give me my allowance!"

Okay so maybe they won't be getting the same sort of welfare but I heard many pacific island nations get all sorts of aid from the US. Then there is the matter of reparations for the over century long occupation and oppression.

Reparations? Yeah, right. Ask the African-Americans how that's working out for them. A few Pacific island nations get assistance from the USA because we detonated A-bombs and made parts of them uninhabitable. No comparison to Hawaii, which voted overwhelmingly for statehood in a free election.

This is all hypothetical but if the US did grant Hawaii it's independence, we would go the full route with reparations. I mean the US is for fair play after all and if we are going to admit to and correct this mistake by granting independence, we would have to take it all the way. African-Americans did not get direct reparations for slavery but they did get other benefits and entitlements, did they not? The vote for statehood has no bearing on this issue of reparations.
