if the county hired someone who was actually competent they would too easily expose the incompetency of the rest of the system.
That's true.
One of first jobs I had in the islands involved testing restaurant equipment on Maui. I could complete about 5 per day.
I was invited to the company Christmas party on Oahu and when talking shop with the Honolulu boys, they told me they were expected to complete one job in the morning and one in the afternoon. When I told them I did five a day, they took me aside and said I better never let their boss know.
I'm not sure what happened, but I never received an invitation for another Christmas Party after that.

What bugs me about Alameda... not only is he rewarded for campaigning for Billy with a job he's unqualified for, but he gets the top possible salary for it. That's what an extremely qualified candidate would get, but instead royal political payola goes on the county taxpayers' bill.
When he says "no conflict because the elections are already pau," this shows an arrogance beyond belief. How dumb do they think we are?

How dumb do they think we are? Very, very dumb. And they may be right because they continue to get away with it. Like Mendo, I just about choked when I read Alameda's "the election's over" statement and then saw that he was hired in at the top of the salary range.

Well, another of Kenoi's minions (inherited from Inouye (not Lorraine, Daniel K.), Boylan jumps ship. His resignation is another WTH? Too much heat in the kitchen, perhaps? (*Snipped - More at link/BBM)

Peter Boylan, the high-profile spokesman of embattled Mayor Billy Kenoi, resigned after nine months on the job.
In an email to the Tribune-Herald, Boylan said he no longer was working as the mayor’s executive assistant and that he moved home to Oahu. He did not respond to follow-up emails or phone calls seeking comment about why he left.
Wally Lau, county managing director, said in an email the decision was entirely Boylan’s.
“After serving with us honorably for nine months, Peter returned to be with his family and friends on Oahu,” Lau said. “He was an asset to our administration and to our Hawaii Island community. We wish him well on his future endeavors.”
Lau added no decision has been made about finding a replacement.
Boylan’s departure comes less than three months after Big Island newspapers reported Kenoi used his county purchasing card, or pCard, for personal expenses, including visits to Honolulu hostess bars. Kenoi’s use of the pCard is the focus of an investigation by the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General and an ethics complaint.
Boylan was the chief spokesman for Kenoi after he announced he would no longer be answering reporters’ questions about the pCard case.
A former Honolulu Advertiser newspaper reporter and public relations representative for U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa’s Democratic U.S. Senate campaign, Boylan joined Kenoi’s staff Sept. 16.
At that time, Kenoi said Boylan’s years of legislative experience as deputy chief of staff for the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, would serve the county well.
While some speculated Boylan was brought in to prepare Kenoi for a run for higher office, Kenoi said the addition of high-profile names to his administration, including Boylan and comedian Augie T, were not a sign of future political aspirations, and that he planned to return to his private law practice at the end of his two terms in office.
“I’ve made it clear. I won’t be running for office in two years,” Kenoi told West Hawaii Today in November. “I’m not leaving Hawaii County. This is my home … There’s no other (higher) political office on Hawaii Island. So, I’m done.”
Yeah, I guess Kenoi is "done". What a damn disappointment he has been, and professes to hold dear the teachings of kupuna, being from Kalapana. (Rolling my eyes).
JMO.
P.S. He should run for OHA Trustee! He'd fit in perfectly. (Double eye roll...sorry for the small kine snark.)

I've never been the person to say "If you don't like it here, leave", but damn, I do wonder why someone would reside in a place while being so completely miserable. Have you been in the ocean, lately?
I'm not laughing with you........
I can't speak for everyone but a lot of us were raised to fix problems not run from them. Your assumption that we are miserable is laughable. It's not difficult to recognize a problem and attempt to rectify it without letting it affect you.
Some may view pointing out problems with corruption in government as a negative. Others may view it as a positive. Perception is relative maybe stop judging others based off your assumptions?

snorkle is a strong supporter of Billy Kenoi. When Kenoi's personal spending on his pCard was revealed it was easy enough try to explain it away as no big deal and point to the mayor's accomplishments (and there have been some).
But then the true extent showing his misappropriation of taxpayer funds for personal use slowly unfolded. Now we have the scandal over the hiring of under qualified, over paid workers in his administration. It's become almost impossible to stay positive about Kenoi.
So how to spin the situation?
When corruption in local government is brought up, ignore the part about corruption, focus on the local, and hope no one's paying attention to the sleight of hand:
Claim that any discussion about Billy's actions are negative. That it's an attack on local politics, policies, and local people in general. There's nothing wrong with our elected officials, it's the people who are complaining who are the problem. Why don't they like Hawaii? Why don't they jump in the ocean and swim back to their real homes? And on and on. "Hey Rocky! Watch me pull a Caucasion out of my hat! Nothin' up my sleeve!"
This issue has nothing to do with being anti-local. It has everything to do with corrupt officials.

Because it's a really expensive place to live without a $100K salary.
Just give everyone County jobs and they'll stop complaining.

I take umbrage at this cowardly assault on Hawaii County's criminal community! It's well-known that this is a great place to be a criminal; a place where the scofflaw can hold their head high and ply their craft openly with pride. Furthermore, those law abiding ninnies who clamor for decency and justice would do well to abandon their civilized morality and join in, in the wonderful world of underworld enterprise.

At this point it would have been cheaper to buy her some fancy paper from a degree mill.
Especially since the appeals will probably last well beyond the Kenoi administration.
