Statement on Mauna Kea from Governor’s Office, by Chief of Staff Mike McCartney:
HONOLULU -- Eleven adults were arrested by the Hawai‘i Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) Wednesday, during a protest to stop construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope atop Mauna Kea.
The arrests are unfortunate, but the state’s number one priority is the safety of the people on Mauna Kea – from TMT workers to protestors who are exercising their first amendment rights to peaceably assemble and protest in a civil manner.
We are disappointed and concerned that large boulders were found in the roadway leading to the summit of Mauna Kea. This action is a serious and significant safety hazard and could put people at risk.
Because of this, we are making an assessment to determine how to proceed.
We will be working to clear the roadway tomorrow. Therefore, construction is on hold until further notice.
**Governor David Ige is in Washington, D.C. for an energy forum with the Washington Post and meetings with Hawai‘i’s congressional delegation and federal officials.

Does it look like the police or even the governor are going to ensure that the TMT construction goes forward? It looks to me like no one feels they can really stand up to the protestors.

All I can tell you, Pam, is that observatory staff who witnessed today's events were less than impressed with the professionalism and commitment of both county police and DLNR law-enforcement officers.

One thing that the TMT and other folks will be take notice of is the rule of law or lack there-of. It is impossible that all parties that have any sort of stake in this mess would not be contemplating what the state's next move will be. Rightly or wrongly the state simply can not let this go without massively damaging their credibility and authority. It makes some sense that they didn't roll in with bulldozers today but that says nothing about what they are going to do tomorrow. As such it is irrational to celebrate this as an anti-TMT victory. It isn't anything yet. It was expected that there would be some sort of protest. My views on the matter are probably clear from previous posts. I think the protests are without merit. I further think that some of the foolish lengths to which protestors have stretched their arguments are damaging to the sovereignty movement in general. I think that this is an example. It remains to be seen what the state response is. Ultimately the state will have to get tougher.

Vandalism? The action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property? Putting some rocks on a road? What got destroyed?
Calling some rocks boulders is vandalism, the action of deliberate destruction of the reputation of someone whose considerate action it was to use rocks instead of boulders.
Seriously, what is the State's, the DLNR's, the UH's vision with Mauna Kea?
The Office of Mauna Kea Management stated that decommission plans are only in place for TMT for an estimated cost of 83 million dollars, but not for the older telescopes:

All the observatories on Mauna Kea have to return their sites to their original condition once they are decommissioned. It's part of their lease. Please don't make stuff up.

The way I see it?
The cops / DLNR will just keep going up there..Day by day, arresting another 10-15 daily. Soon, these so called protectors will be tired of this game. Especially when it starts to rain and get really cold.
My bets are by next week sometime the TMT project will be alive and moving and this will all be behind us. If this happens to continue, then the state will just send up a few more cops and they will haul out the hard core 20-40 daily. Won't take too long.
