i appreciate the intention of what you are suggesting, VancouverIslander, really.
though frankly ...and quite honestly... i haven't seen much at all, if anything, here on PW or in the broader "discussion" elsewhere that is specifically aimed along the lines of what you are referring to. in fact, ever since last year's very boisterous public hearing with the Department of the Interior in Honolulu on the matter of some sort of federal recognition (link below), the vast majority of what i see coming from people expressing themselves as sovereignty proponents has hardly been realistic. but it has oftentimes been quite ugly in it's divisive rhetoric. sometimes venomously elitist, other times more benignly indulging in overly romanticized grandstanding.
more to the point, where there is any reference, if it is not stated outright, it is usually suggestive of radical sovereign "restoration" or some such unrealistic scenario. i agree, it would be great if all the emotional rhetoric out there was replaced with something more rational and realistic. ...a little less self-aggrandizement in some cases wouldn't hurt either.

edit add: by the way, the weather mauka of Mountain View has finally started to dry out some.

My response to the issue of sovereignty is directed at crazies who think Hawaii can secede, evict 'non-Hawaiians' and exist as a separate country under a despot king. Over my dead body, as they say.
Those who seek a resurgence of Hawaiian culture, language and pride and assertion of Hawaiian cultural sensitivities in the daily business of the State of Hawaii have my full and unconditional support. Many of us who are not Hawaiians, who never will be or pretend to be, will nevertheless embrace a renaissance of one of the earth's great cultures in the land of its birth and its dominance in State affairs. Hawaii is the land of the Hawaiians. It is also America. It really can, and must, be both.

No, this is totally possible, all the Kingdom needs is some nuclear weapons and an insane frontman who looks good on camera.

Oahu (Pearl Harbor) with nuclear weapons?
Now that's a really frightening thought.

I must admit I find it maddening that the BI might turn away private investment. The TMT debacle calls into question all of the money that would be given to the community plus the stimulus of the existence of well-paying jobs. In fact they want to decommission some of the sites of well-paying jobs. This deprives local business of the money the salaries would spend locally. It also is a chilling effect to those who otherwise might have wanted to invest in anything on the BI, since even long-term agreements with a large amount of money given to Hawaii might not in the end be honored! So is the plan then to just live on welfare checks forever? Those of us who receive welfare for conditions we absolutely cannot change (severe chronic illness) can find this sort of thing very unfair, as it gives us an undeserved bad name.

Isn't it ironic for one welfare recipient to complain about other welfare recipients? I haven't been on the BI long, but it's obvious that Puna is rural and my observation to date, it's obvious that welfare recipients spending the money in the economy is an indirect benefit to local businesses where the money is spent. And if Hawaiians form a consensus that they don't want the TMT, who are we to force it on them? And why shouldn't they negotiate a better deal if there's an opportunity?

People get welfare for different reasons. If I want to support benefits for illness or disability, or to make sure children get fed, that is my right. I don't think when jobs are scarce that good jobs should be turned away, and seven years is long enough for negotiation. JMO.

There are people who receive government assistance because they can't work.
There are also people who get government assistance because they don't want to work.
One of them needs the help for their survival, the other for their leisure time.
I think beepbeep was pointing out that there are also people who can't see the difference between the two: the plan then to just live on welfare checks forever? ... it gives us an undeserved bad name.

I'm not sure Trip Advisor needs to host a discussion on the economics of East Hawai'i. But maybe the protesters would make more interesting copy, as well as the telescopes. Throw in some lava just to get people's attention.
Thank you to the people who understood what I was trying to say here and why it is important.
