Hey Wyatt - where are you in Seaview? I am on Mapuana. We are two lots behind the old brown ranch house up near the front. Hope to be building early next summer. What style are you building? I will be over in November and would love to check out your progress.

Just thought I'd join in about Seaview. I agree that it seems better each time I visit, and will be there again in early Dec. The lots are closer to 1/5 acre although still small compared to LE. On our last visit when we thought we might buy more land elsewhere, LE was clearly the nicest neighborhood though. Some Seaview lots have not been too horrible lately. If you can live without an ocean view, some have been selling for more like 50-60K rather than the 90-130K that ones closer to the ocean. For me another great benefit of the area besides Kehena is that it is very gay friendly, although I haven't spent much time in other Puna areas to really compare. Probably my favorite thing about the Seaview location is I can walk downhill 5 minutes from my lot to the rocky coastline and see and hear nothing but the ocean and nature. Quite an incredible place to have coffee in the morning.

Wyatt, if you're around in Dec I will come by introduce myself.

Ok, it's my turn - Hi! I'm Emily!

Tomorrow will be exactly one year since my Husband, Greg, and I landed here in Hilo and started our new life here. We moved from the suburbs of Chicago and we're not looking back! We got onto the idea of moving to Hawaii when a guy that Greg worked with told him of a conversation he had with an elderly lady. He asked her what she might have done differently in her life and she simply said "I would have been a beach bum!". That got us thinking about a more simple life and a warmer climate. Nowhere on the mainland seemed very interesting, the Virgin Islands were too expensive and not enough job prospects. Then we started researching Hawaii on the internet and found out about the East side of the Big Island. We couldn't believe the prices that land was going for. Who would have imagined that one could buy land for so cheap - and in Hawaii! We had been to Kona for our honeymoon in Sept 2002 so we knew a little about the Big Island. We came for the month of March 2004 and bought 8 acres in Mountain View. If we had waited a few years like we were thinking originally, there is no way we would be able to afford it now - good timing. When we were back home packing up and telling everyone what we were up to, some were sad, others were very supportive and said they were jealous for us actually going for our dream. They said they had similar dreams but never made them happen and they wished they could do it too. To all of you out there thinking and dreaming about Hawaii - go for it! It's really not that hard. We're only 26 and 29 - if we can do it, you can too!

We didn't have any trouble finding jobs. I got a job within a month working for a general contractor - I do the office and accounting work. Greg took some time off and then got a job here also since he already had construction experience. Our boss is the best and we are lucky to have found such a great guy to work for. So everything fell right into place.

We have really enjoyed living in Hawaii. The weather is so mild, the people are so nice and there is always somewhere to go hike or just see the beauty of the Island. We just got back from an unexpected trip home - Greg's dad passed away unexpectedly. So although it was nice that we could make the trip back for that, and it was nice to see everyone - it was even nicer to come back "home" to our simple land in Hawaii. We were reminded of all of the reasons we wanted to come here in the first place, so many people, so much traffic, no "Aloha Spirit". I love the fact that people here actually wave to you, and say hello, and talk with you for hours "just because".

I've posted on here a few times, and some of you know that we live in a container! People back home can't believe it! When people start going on and on about how they just couldn't imagine living like this, I simply say "how did your great-grandparents live?". It's really not that bad. We're seasoned campers anyhow, and we were actually living in a camper before we moved here. We'll build a house eventually, but for now, we're content with the simple life. I'd rather live in a container in Hawaii than in a mansion in Illinois anyday Smile We bought our container in Illinois, packed it all up and had it delivered to our land. I wrote a detailed post about buying the container and shipping it over on this forum - here's the link:
http://www.punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=145&FORUM_ID=2&CAT_ID=1&Topic_Title=Emily%2Dmore+details+on+container%3F&Forum_Title=punaweb+forum

We are actually going to be building a vacation rental on our land first. We have enough property in the front of our lot to make a separate secluded clearing. So we have a drafter working on the plans now. We'll see how the rental works out - if it doesn't go well we can always just live in it ourselves. It would be nice if it would rent well so that we could generate enough income to at least cover the mortgage and start to build some equity.

One last note - we have chickens that started laying eggs about a month ago - we are getting 18-20 eggs per day! I need to find some more customers, so let me know if any of you want some fresh eggs - we have brown and green/blue eggs! Anyone want to trade eggs for something you grow in your garden?

Aloha,
Emily

Hi. My name is Polly. My husband Wayne and I went to the Big Island on vacation May 30-June 6 of this year. A friend of mine moved to the Island of Hawaii a year ago and got her real estate license. Well, I met her for breakfast and we decided to buy our own piece of paradise (4 acres) in Fern Acres. We returned in September to check out building on the land. We will be returning again in January 2006 to have our land cleared. We plan to build an HPM lehaula home. We live on 10 acres in Pilot Hill, CA. My husband is retired but I am still working for another 3-1/2 years. We plan on living their part time.

Our side by side 2 acre lots are on Hibiscus Street between poles 81 and 82.

Nice to meet everyone.

Greetings Aloha My name is Dave my wife's name is Peggy and we speak to you all this evening from Maine although we have left our hearts in Puna on our very own peace of Paradise. We will soon reside in Hawaiian Acres which we recently purchased. Our short term goal is to arrive and construct a small but comfortably modest residence. We are very self reliant folks and always find a way to accomplish what some would say is impossible. I am a firm believer that the impossible simply takes a little longer. Wifey was an operations manager for a local phone company while Mwa is a semi retired heavy equipment mechanic disabled with a nasty little eye disease. We boast of one daughter Stacy and two incredible grandsons Zachary and Tyler, who we will miss more than words can say. We all have an understanding though and it is time for us to have that adventure that knaws at the very soul of every adventurous person. We've built a couple of homes so far and we believe that we have one more in us. At present we a struggling with whether or not to get involved with the permitting process. I realize the implications of not permitting but we don't ever plan on selling. We hope to be there by spring time currently we are preparing our pets Akua and Akela for their trip and I guess we have to wait 120 days min. before they can leave. Peggy will continue to work for a while, probably some mindless task which is how she describes her new career. and Mwa will build build build and plant plant plant and hopefully be helpful somewhere for someone who needs it. I am pretty knowledgable so if anyone has a question about building procedures or would like a second opinion on something please don't hesitate to ask, i promise only accurate info and if I can't give you an answer I will find the answer for you. I guess Thats All Folks Live Long and Prosper May The force Be With You....................Dave &Peggy

Well there you have it, more not so shy peoples sharing their dreams! One day neighbors!

For everyone's info Emily has chickens that are presently laying 18 eggs a day! When we settle on island she will sell us some starters for our own little clutch of centipede killers! I love natural remedies, but as Gene says even cobra venom is natural so be careful.

Welcome to Polly and Wayne and Dave Mwa and wife Peggy Ann also, what talents, what dreams! I think Peggy and I may have a lot in common when it comes to the telephone line!

This is such a nice community board. Such fun to read of everyone's plans and progress.

Another source for information and inspiration isn't currently on the board as much due to technical difficulties and that is Pam Lamont, PSLamont who is entirely into sharing info gathered, resource references and all as she has been on island well over a year and is currently in the building phase. We were able to visit with her on our last trip over and I can confirm her Piggy's have the best palace on island that I've seen. Nothing spared. Also the house was all framed up and roof soon to go on. When we drove up to the building site, the progress being made was astounding. Alright goodnight Gracie! Mella L
