Just wanted to bring this subject forward. Been two weeks and no responses. Who goes there? The shadow knows! Boy is that dating a person or not! Thanks to Emily for the very detailed list of things to keep track of when building. Any lerkers there might want to share a line or three. Aloha Mella L

I've been reading this board for a few months now, but was too shy to introduce myself. My husband and I are in our early 40's with a 14 yr old girl and 12 yr old boy. We are Asian. We've visited BI a few times but spent our time in Volcano Village rentals. We recently bought a lot in HPP and hope to build there after retirement. The kids love Hawaii and want to move right away, but the schooling issue tells me to wait until they go to college. I have a small family of 1 brother, 1 sister and my parents. I see my parents every few weeks, but my siblings...we don't see each other sometimes for months (in the same large town & everyone is busy). My husband has a large family, but they are not close.
I've read about people moving to BI and then moved back to mainland due to family issue. My first concern is being so far from my parents. Also, when the kids finish college, they will more than likely settle in the mainland. I am already thinking of when my daughter needs me when she has a family (birth & baby)...and then I won't be there much to help. My mother kept our children until they were 3 or 4 years old and that gave me peace of mind when I went to work. My husband is a software engineer. I am an accountant and was working for a large oil & gas firm.The overtime, stress & requirement to be there interfered and gave me guilt when I left the children to go to work, especially when they were ill. Having my mother made a whole world of difference; and I want to be there for my children in the future...if they need me, just like my mom helped me. That is my doubt about moving to BI.
However, we still have our piece of land there waiting for us when we are ready. I am hoping we can move in 10 or 15 years, and being able to find a job in Hilo or nearby. We can't afford to retire at 50, especially with the high cost of living, paying loan to build the house, etc.

Aloha to all, I'm Hutch, in Leilani, of course, I know what it's like to be torn between "home" and paradise. I've moved here 3 times from Oregon, first in the 80's, moved back because of lack of money/work, second time in the 90's, family illness, (Dad had Alzheimer's & his wife divorced him right after I got back, after getting him to sign his house over to her- ahh another wicked stepmother story, but I digress). Anyway, after he died I got my first PC and one day surfing the net I came across the Hawaii MLS service and saw how low prices had dropped, sold everything and was living here in 4 months. Landed on Sept. 15, 1999, only went back once for a week in the last 6 years- hated it, probably won't ever go back. Hardly a day goes by that I don't notice something new and amazing here, that I don't pinch myself to make sure I'm really here! Such a great place with great people! Never give up! if you want to live here bad enough you will! PS Checked my hometown's online newspaper, they're having freezing rain while I'm looking out the screens at the jungle & flowers, PINCH ME!

Howdy!
Guess I'll jump in.
My wife and I are retired. Me from the Navy and from the U.S. Department of State. My wife is retired Civil Service.
Cultural awareness is not a problem with us. I am originally from Oklahoma and she is from China. We have lived in (not counting the U.S.) Taiwan (4 years), Japan (3 years), Adak, Alaska (3 years. I know that is part of the U.S., but it is way out on the Alutian Islands!), Istanbul (2 years), Paris (2 years), Beijing (2 years), Nairobi (3 years), Brussels (4 years). We presently live in Northern California. We have moved 15 times, so moving is not new to us.
We are not strangers to Hawaii. We have stopped off and spent time in Owahu many times. We have also been to Kuwi and spent 3 weeks in Maui 3 months ago. We came to the BI once, but it was probably 30 or more years ago.
We have always entertained the idea of living in Hawaii, but what with kids, grandkids, family, etc. have never seriously thought about it. We are now, and that is why I am "lurking" on this website and on the Konaweb site. Gathering information, reading, etc. After several months of looking, it is becoming clearer to me that the Hilo or Puna area would be more what we are intrested in. We are simple folk, don't need a lot to live, and enjoy meeting people. My wife says I like to "talk story" too much! We both like to garden and I like to fish and read.
We are planing a visit to the BI sometime next year and hope to spend a month looking around.

Some of us are on island, welcome Hutch Leilani is beautiful, you'll have to be one of the voices of experience as we have only few posters living on island, and some of us are potential property owners, property owners, and dreamers and searchers. Welcome to Dan and wife! We are all learning and tagging along, encouraging and plotting together here.
I know Adak, lived on Kodiak for 3 years and learned to snow ski and ice skate there, as a Navy brat! Well one day we will all be warmed by the Puna sunshine! A toast!

Aloha to all! I'm John and I've been here on the island for about 5 years. My partner and I were visiting O'ahu in 2000 and literally never set foot on anything outside of the Hilo airport before deciding to move. We flew over one afternoon, landed and walked down the the tourist helicopters, toured the volcano by air, landed back at the airport, walked down to the commuter terminal to fly back to O'ahu and started making plans to move. We arrived a few months later. You can just imagine how my boss reacted to "I don't have a job or anything, but I'm moving to the Big Island -- I just have to do it." Luckily he liked me and did everything he could to accomodate me.
After a few years here and buying/selling several properties (ask me about The Tragedy sometime -- the one I should have kept and still kick myself over), a Realtor friend encouraged us to become Realtors, so we did and have worked in that profession full-time for the last 2 years. And I love it.
We live currently in Nanawale. For the record, don't believe all the bad stuff you hear about Nanawale. The community association has gotten very active in the last couple of years and really, dramatically improved the subdivision. We own some lots in Kapoho Vacationland and will probably begin building on the first of those early next year. In the meantime, at least we still get to enjoy the great tide pools, the beach at Kehena and all the other amazing things about this island.

Welcome to John also! Great new virtual friends and one day neighbors are all tuning in. Super. John our realtor was Richard Geddes from Pahoa hr has a place in Nanawale also and we spent one week there on Ginger Road. Road wasn't great and house was ok for a week, the neighborhood was quiet and we had a wonderful time. Loved the Java sparrows, little clowns and we called them mini puffins, bananas and guava, and more orchids than you could count!
No I'm not the welcome wagon just yet not on island until 6/06, just get excited to have more new people tuning in here!!! Mella L

Two weeks without a post and I thought I'd bring this forward.
We need a new intro for our new poster short-winded, when did you join, or are you just a lurker like some of us?
It would be nice for an introduction, are you on island or just hoping like some of us? Have you built a home or are you in the design phase? Where is your property or have you bought any yet. Just suggestions. What are your interests, challenges, dreams?

Aloha, mella. I should have responded when you first answered my post, but honestly, it just slipped my mind. I know Richard well -- we've done a lot of business together where he represented one party and I represented the other. He's a good guy. I'm glad I found this site and wish I had more to offer about gardening and such, but I usually just buy my veggies at the Maku'u farmer's market.
Here I am in the most wonderful place to grow plants on Earth and I just don't do it. Lame, huh?
