Thought this article was very good, shares some good insight to the billion dollar extra large telescope race our big island finds itself currently in. This race these three teams are participating in may lead to many wonderful new discoveries, very exciting times for some. Pretty Sure these teams have taken into account the many financial aspects involved in building these telescopes. Maunakea's resources and conveniences were certainly contributing factors to why it was chosen as a possible site in this race, expectedly so. Sure hope this telescope race is what the people of the big island wanted or needed as well, or were they given the same considerations by these teams?.

P.S. No one wants to lose billion dollar races, even the nuclear or moon walking races had its pro's and con's, winners and losers.

I appreciate the before pictures of the TMT site, it looks vast, calm, and peaceful. Not sure any TMT construction will start before all the decommissioning that needs to happen first atop Maunakea?

"The project’s EIS acknowledges that adding buildings could disrupt the flow of rainwater and that wastewater discharges create the potential for pollution. But the study concluded that the impact would be “less than significant” because the TMT is designed to lower that risk.

That double-walled septic tank will collect all the water, wastewater and chemicals used so they can be trucked off the mountain, Dawson said.

Bianca Isaki, a board member of the organization KAHEA: The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance, doesn’t believe the EIS findings are based on sufficient studies.

“Did you look hard enough to see if there was impacts?” she asked skeptically. The observatories have a history of accidentally spilling sewage and chemicals including hydraulic fluid and propylene glycol. Past incidents have ranged from small indoor mercury spills that were cleaned up quickly to up to 1,000 gallons of sewage seeping into the ground in 2008."
