Hi,
Frustrating at times with the lack of diversity and quality in Puna Restaurants especially in Pahoa. I do like Luquinns but let's face it is a dump inside and often crowded. I would enjoy a good seafood place or SteakHouse or Family Style Diner.

Aloha Lee, Know what you mean, I sure wish there was a restaurant here that knew what a steak and a baked potato was, or any kind of potatoes for that matter! As far as Luquin's, maybe Sal will read this and take a hint- how about a new coat of paint and some linoleum Sal? It's been years! I hear there's a new place opening at Malama Marketplace, but it's just another pizza joint. Lots of opportunities here for an aspiring restauranteur!

Have you tried Black Rock Cafe? I've only been there a couple of times and it wasn't spectacular, but good.

Black Rock is pretty decent for breakfast but the few times I have had dinner there it just seemed like bar food. Last year I ate at Puna Village Cafe a few times and thought it was pretty good but it was new then so it could have declined. Really good New York Style pizza would be awesome. A burrito joint would be good too. A nice steakhouse would be good but I am not sure if they could make it there. I would love to open a gourmet food shop with really good sandwiches, dips & pastries but not so sure the area would support that either.

I don't know about steaks.
But there is a Burrito place in Glide, Or. Glide is on the way to Crater Lake (National Park)from Roseburg. It is a little trailer like you see at craft fairs and park concerts. You could move it with a truck. Lots look like converted rv's 16ft maybe. Anyway, It is only open part of the year when Crater Lake roads are clear of snow. I don't know the owners personally, but I as told that they did well enough in that time period that they do not work the rest of the year.
Just thought it might give someone some ideas.

FYI, I was in Luquin's with clients yesterday and noticed that the interior has just been freshly repainted. Maybe not with colors that I would have chosen, but its repainted and looks a lot better.

Are you guys complaining?! I would kill to have Paolo's in Kona; Luquin's is better than ANY Mexican place in Kona and the Thai restaurant in Pahoa is pretty good too!

Aloha John,I for one am not complaining about Luquin's food, it's great, better than any Mexican I've had anywhere, here or the mainland, just that it's a little run down. I haven't been there since it's been painted. Hopefully they've changed the decor too. (the posters of Mexico have been washed so many times they're blurry). As far as Paolo's, Hate to dis them, I know they get raves, but I had a really bad experience there: First, our waiter acted weird, like he was high on ice or something, jittery and sniffing constantly, when my food arrived it was cold, and when I opened my fine linen knapkin 2 cockroaches flew out of it. And we paid over $30 per person? For that? That was a couple of years ago and I haven't/won't go back.

Had lunch at Luquin's yesterday, much improved! Much cleaner. I've never seen that color before though, sure is bright.

What about a good BBQ joint? Think there would be any interest in some good ol' southern BBQ around there? I have pondered opening a restaurant from time to time. I helped design, build, and run a restaurant when I was in college. And I must admit, I can whip up some pretty outasite BBQ.
Just some food for thought.....lol....
