As Katrina pointed out on the previous page, the un appointed Board member was appointed to fill a vacancy, not voted in. As per our bi laws, he can be voted out by the BOD, and was.

Yes I recall the Postmaster saying a few years ago that we would have to pay for our own boxes if we wanted more of them. They are now donating 4,000 boxes. The cluster boxes we now have in HPP I believe will be moved to the centralized locations. The idea is to get them off the main roads where it currently imposes danger to us and the mail carriers. It'll be easier to deliver in centralized locations as well.

How they will do all this hasn't been brought up yet. But our physical addresses will be on the boxes. This is at the Postmaster's request. HPP will have to organize the whole shebang.

I'd like to add something more to the mailbox question....I retract what I said. I believe they will move the existing mailboxes to the centralized location but I haven't heard confirmation of that. It would seem like the logical thing to do but as I said it's not confirmed. It would also seem logical that those of us who have boxes in HPP will just get transferred to the new locations. And those who are outside of the park will finally get boxes in HPP.

The organization and implementation of it all seems like a big job and hopefully there'll only be small bumps in the road. I personally wish my mailbox could remain where it is but it's not up to me.

This won't happen right away. Lots of work ahead and planning.

Providing even less service does not sound logical at all. Look at what would result should all HPP PO Boxes get consolidated in two locations:

SAVINGS: Right now the delivery people drive to the banks of boxes on Kaloli, Paradise, & Maku'u. Most of their work time is used to place mail in the boxes. Their total driving time in HPP is negligible, probably less than 10 minutes.

COST FACTOR: Thousands of people who now drive a short distance to their mail box would need to travel miles pick up mail in a centralized location. I now bike 1/2 mile, that would change to a 3 mile drive. In a car. Multiply this by thousands of residents, and calculate the extra gas required. Let's say a gallon per person each week, times 52 weeks, times 4000 boxes. That's over 200,000 gallons of gas - - so much for the State of Hawaii's energy savings proposals.

We should not allow the Post Office to herd us into a situation that is worse than an already bad arrangement. Most "towns" of 10,000 get residential curbside delivery. That is what we should be pushing for. Or our own Post Office that may be more responsive to our needs.
