My Old Dog

So sorry, Opihikao, but at least you had a very special last few days with him and soon you'll be able to look back at all the wonderful times you had with him and smile rather than cry.

I'm so sorry Opihikao. I wish you comfort in your good memories of your friend. Losing a family member, human or canine or feline or otherwise, is painful.

They give us so much and it is hard to let them go, to walk across a room without our little shadow, to see their toys and dishes and the things that made their lives with us. Over and again I cried during this thread. When I read, "He went to sleep peacefully, on his own," I burst into sobs. It's a testament to your love and devotion that you struggled with a very difficult decision, Opihikao. In the end, peace came on its own. But too often we can let that heartbreak define our memories. It takes work to replace the heartbreak with memories of how much our lives were for the better by bringing them into our homes. In time, it comes. I'm touched by all the stories and kind words here and wish you and your family well. I send my own sincere condolences.
