Awesome! They can't build this soon enough!
I sure hope phase II brings in movie theaters.

And if they do....we'll just continue to grocery shop in Hilo.

"ghetto pricing."

Better than no groceries at no pricing.
And who knows? Maybe gypsy will rent a space and set up a miniature golf course for the keiki!

I saw the tracks immediately - they swirled back & forth across the shuffled sand of the path. They seemed the design of indecision, but I am not sure. Mary Oliver

HOTPE: " Maybe gypsy will rent a space and set up a miniature golf course for the keiki!" That would be a good use of the old Malama market.

Developer Puna Kai LLC, headed by Bryson and Lorna Kuwahara, plans to start all on- and off-site work by February and open the first phase that includes Malama Market in December 2017.

Phase two of the center could be open by June 2018 with another anchor tenant.

Really? Start in Feb and be open in December? Here? In Hawaii? Who they paying off to be this ambitious? [Big Grin]

Who they paying off to be this ambitious?

They're using pre-desecrated lands, so no problems with "protectors".

And it all will be paved over sooner or later in lava eventually. Lava doesn't care about "higher ground".

Little stores like Ace Hardware, Lex Brodie, SubWay, etc...etc... Right.... unlikely. We still eat pahoa fish every week... I take my car to lex pretty much for everything... I still shop ace from time to time and pretty much all my propane tanks are filled next door to ace.

Hmmmm... I hardly ever even shop at malama these days. Of course we still go into hilo every other day, even then the local farmers markets get most of our business.

Don't do much else there, but I'll keep going regardless where malama goes.

FYI -- They closed a while ago.

I think it would be nice for Ace Hardware to take the slightly larger Malama location, remodel it by expanding in the parking area with a garden center and an indoor lumber yard. Look out Home Depot!
