quote:Most of the readily available land is in Ocean View, which is in lava zone 1 or 2 (most of the rest is in Naalehu, which gets very heavy vog). It contains or is immediately adjacent to flows from 1887, 1907, 1916, and 1926. It's been an unusually long time since Mauna Loa has erupted from the southwest rift, and when it does, the flows move fast - the 1950 flow broke out around 10 PM, cut off the highway before midnight, and reached the ocean 15 miles from the vent by 1 AM, less than three hours.

I realize most of the island is not as cheap as Puna, but Ka'u is. it's 62 miles away from anything, but it's cheap, no lava, less RLW, and meanwhile Ka'u has the second smallest population while being a district the size of Oahu, talk about the opposite of population density!
