Unsavory things happen everywhere. When I was in Washington DC we had to go through security (including metal detectors) to get into Safeway. One time we turned around at the Safeway parking lot because there were about 40 people fighting. At KFC they removed all the dining tables and chairs to discourage loitering. We ordered our chicken through bullet-proof glass and it was dispensed through a bullet-proof turnstile.
In New York City we went to one venue that after the metal detector and bag check, we also got frisked. This was pre-9/11.
That club that was recently shot up in Florida always employed an armed cop (not a security guard) to supplement their other security measures and personnel.
In Portland they have to put police in the schools, on the mass transit, all the stores have security guards (some only at night).
I could go on and on, but maybe because of some the experiences I've been though, I've never seen anything in Puna that surprised me. We actually have it pretty good.
