Thanks for your welcome. Yes, a very kind member of the "Lamont Ranch" patiently responded to my list of questions with insightful and thorough comments. It is encouraging to hear how "mainlanders" are adjusting so nicely to their new environment. Thanks much to Pam!
My wife and I visited the BI three years ago. Ever since, I've been considering relocation there, possibly to the Puna area. My wife is unsure, due mainly to concerns about family and "remoteness". There are other issues. In time, she may be more open.
Meanwhile, a neighbor of ours just bought a place in Honokaa. They are now selling their place in San Diego County. They are thrilled about their new home.

My name is Lenny and I live in New Jersey. I have lived here all of my life. (well since I was 2) I got married in 2001 and visited Hawaii on my honeymoon. I was there for 11 days and I island hopped. I went to Maui, Hawaii and Oahu. I loved Maui and Hawaii the best. We really fell in love with the island and Hawaii turned into an obsession for me. I have insisted on moving there since we stepped foot on the island but I my husband felt we needed to plan, and plan, and plan for the move. We had a set of twins in 2002 and there went the plans. But my obsession never seized. I felt a calling of sorts from the island. Really (i am not crazy, delusional, or schizophrenic) it really does call me! I see Hawaii in everything and long for the quality of life it has to offer.
We decided to settle for "FLORIDA" (of all places) as a compromise. I COULD NOT DO IT. I JUST COULD NOT DO IT. I decided if it was not Hawaii I would rather be miserable in New Jersey. Recently I told him if he was too cautious to move to Hawaii I would just leave without him. Not as an ultimatum but because it was really time for me to move on and be complete and mostly because I wanted to offer my children as well as myself a better and more down to earth lifestyle that was as far away from east coast city life as possible. Now we have come to an agreement and I have come up with a sensible way to do it. (Sensible means safe for him) I realized that he wanted go as much as I did but was afraid of doing it without a well hatched out plan for survival. Anyway, we put the house up for sale last week and as soon as we get a buyer we are on our way. Hopefully if we get a buyer before the summer ends I will be there by September or November the latest. I will be renting with my children for a while as I get us settled down. My husband will be staying here and keeping his job. He will follow as soon as I have a job and the kids are in school. We are debating between buying or building and that final decision will be made ones we are there. We are taking a trip at the end of this month to do the research for my rental place. I want to find a place close to all the areas I want to research when buying and ofcorse close to work. I am extremely excited and I am sure things will work out. There is lots of great positive energy flowing in these forums and most of all an amazing amount of information. I am happy to meet you all and I look forward to speaking with you in the future. Maybe we’ll be neighbors someday and I can have you over for dinner or a BBQ! Lovely meeting you all.

Well we can now add another Carrie coming out of lurker status. So here's the short version of my story...
Two years ago my daughter and I visited the BI to evaluate wether or not we should move and just fell in love. So we returned to NH and started to put our plans into action. It's now been a long two years of liquidating mainland assets, and numerous realestate finding trips to the BI. The end however, is finally in sight. I closed on a home in Mt View in January, spent Feb & Mar renovating the interior, am now back in NH preparing to close on my last house here, and planning on arriving back on the BI in August. My passions are gardening and renovating houses so I can't wait til I get there.
In the meantime, my daughter found love of another kind, and will not be moving with me. Although I'm sure after one visit he'll love it too.
Now, to all the wonderful Punatics who make up this forum. Thank you so much. Even through my lurking I have learned alot. Many times I found my questions answered, without even asking, from all your abundant sage advice. I can't wait to finally arrive and be able to meet you all.

Aloha Carrie! I can't wait until we can say our home closed. We will be on BI soon to look for our home...and Mt. View is one of the areas we are checking out. Hope to be your neighbor soon...we're hoping (fingers crossed) by September. Great to hear yet another dream fulfilled!

My name is Ronny. I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY until I joined the US Coast Guard 13 years ago. Since joining I have lived in Guam (where I met my wonderful wife Angie), Florida, NY, Puerto Rico, Oahu (still own my first home in Kunia), and currently live in San Diego (renting in Clairemont). Angie and I have two children, Malia (5), and Asher(2).
I am considering purchasing a lot in Kalapana Seaview. I was in Puna last week to see several lots, and liked this one lot in Seaview the best. I do have only one real concern and that being the developments proximity to recent lava flows.
Am I over reacting? Should I be concerned with having a possible lava flow overcome my land?
One last question: Do many people from this area commute to Hilo for work? How's the job market? (OK two questions)

Commuting from KS to Hilo would be a long commute and gas is expensive here. I can't answer your other question, ask Madam Pele!

Ronnie looking into Seaview you might check out Wyatt's posts, I believe he is in Seaview and perhaps he knows if people carpool into Hilo. It is a long distance to commute though and if there are heavy rains for the 20 minute shower it makes driving very difficult. But see if Wyatt can fill you in or start a new topic Seaview Estates and see what you come up with. Good luck and aloha newbies!!! Mella L
