Aloha! My name is Rick, my wife Tracy & I are in the "research" mode of planning our move to the Big Island. We are in Ojai Ca. We are looking for a subdivision/area that is close enough to commute to work, I am in the Body Shop Management/Estimator business & she is A Certified Surgical Tech.
We have 2 teenagers, 17 Garrett, 15 Lindsay, 4 horses, 3 Dogs, 2 cats. So we are looking for property for us and our critters. We will be on the island 9-3-06 to 9-10-06 for the "scouting trip"
This website has been a HUGE help, you all answer questions with such enthusiasim I have no need to lurk else where lol. Be prepared I will be asking & reading your replies and fileing answers away to review later. If there are any Equestrians out there I would love to hear from you, we need some info on the horses diet on the island & poss. some places to ride, clubs to ride with, feed stores ect. Also if anyone knows what areas we can for sure have livestock we can start our search in those areas! Mahalo for your information already provided and for info in the future !!

Aloha to Rick and Tracy! Just wanted to mention another site where there are equestrians, people who have shipped horses and trailers and such. THIS is the best forum for ALL else! LOL

Anyway sorry, it is the konaweb.com and many of the ladies over there adore horses! Good luck on your hunting trip! Mella L

Aloha Rick,

Whether any residential subdivision is in commuting distance from work depends on where you are working. If you do not already have specific jobs lined up when you arrive, you might do well to rent a temporary home first, and not make any decision on buying property until your employment is established.

There is an Equestrian Center at the Panaieva Zoo near Hilo which provides riding lessons and sponsors an annual rodeo; someone there may be able to provide the information you need.

The primary horse country on the Big Island is at the opposite end of the island, in and around the Parker Ranch in Waimea. If that is a major focus of interest for you, you might want to consider the northern part of the island in addition to (or instead of) Puna. We have friends in Honolulu who own a horse, and they are talking about moving to Waimea when they retire.

Aloha,

Thank you for the insite, and info on our move, and horse questions. We are aware that Wiamea is "horse country" and we will check that out, but we really get a better vibe from this side of the Island LOL. We commute now for work 1 to 2 hours each way, yea it would be nice to live closer to work but our hobby (horses) are a part of the family, so we hope to have the best of both worlds but will settle for a commute if ness.

Aloha,
We are Mo & Mika from Atlanta. Coming to the BI in July 06 to explore the island, looking for our little piece of paradise. We have been Punaweb forum lurkers for awhile. We like the vibe on this forum! Very cool folks posting here. Hope there’s room for two more wandering souls on the island.
Peace & Mahalo
