For around the same price I purchased the home biogas 2.0 with toilet attachment. It uses 1/3 the amount the water of a standard flush toilet and produces biogas for cooking with the included stove top. I’ve also seen people using the biogas to run other appliances as well.

Yes, of course. But they would have to be very very bad to outweigh the cons of cesspools, septic tanks, sewers, and sewage treatment plants...

I'm not sure I follow the part about the septic system. I thought code requires a septic system to deal with the gray water even if a composting toilet is used?

One of the models has its own self-contained "water treatment plant" that is supposed to do the same things that the large facilities do. We'll see...

The technology for treating wastewater is straightforward, settling to remove solids then aerobic treatment. There really is nothing wrong with a properly designed and maintained septic tank and leach field and it is unlikely anybody is going to reinvent that and come up with something better except for the aerobic treatment units that double down on the concept by spraying the wastewater over hanging batts of furnace filter like material before sending it on to the leach field.

The cost is the big con, especially in blue rock land...

I'm having a septic tank/leach field put in now. Having done so I will probably use regular toilets most of the time but will probably still use the sawdust toilet when I build a small detached bedroom/shed.
