Small tremors along West Coast could lead to 'big one'
This is called a "slow slip" event

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A small burst of tremors have been recorded along the West Coast in the last few weeks, causing scientists and geologists to pay close attention.

Scott Burns, a professor of geology at Portland State University, tells KOIN 6 this event is "quite interesting."

"This is what we call a slow slip type of movement," he said. "The Juan De Fuca Plate is moving underneath us and then all of the sudden, about every 14 months, it stops and it goes in a westerly direction. And as it does that, it creates a lot of tremors. So we are in this slow slip type of movement right now and that's why we're getting a lot of tremors up in Washington, Northern California and then some here in Oregon."

About every 14 months this happens, he said. Eventually, the Juan De Fuca Plate will continue going in an easterly direction and "keep building up the stress in the rocks."

Burns and other scientists predict the "big one" will likely occur during one of these slow slip events.

Each slow slip event puts additional stress onto the "lock zone," eventually causing it to "break" and create a 9.0 or larger magnitude earthquake.

Burns said the "big one" will shake for around four minutes and cause extensive damage.

He cautioned that the slow slip events are a good reminder to be prepared and have a plan with family and an emergency kit at your home.

4 minute earthquake?!!?

That would seem like an eternity. And almost certainly create a tsunami.

I was surprised to read how long the Fukushima earthquake was. It was something like 4 minutes.

About time God gives those self entitled techies in Silicon Valley a "wake up call". I am patiently waiting.

It will be a wake-up call for anyone near the coast in Hawaii as well.

That doesn't sound much like Aloha to me.

BTW, the story is about the possibility of a Cascadia earthquake in the PNW. Silicon valley wouldn't be affected.

These quakes are potentially larger than the largest earthquakes possible in California.

But hey, Seattle has their share of techies now themselves, right?
It's been called San Francisco of the north. No doubt they're self entitled too.

I didn't fact-check any of the info but the New Yorker ran a story a few years back on how another Cascadia earthquake would basically destroy the west coast of the USA. California might be spared the earthquake, but not the tsunamis.

Remember, where all our stuff comes from.

And almost certainly create a tsunami.

Not from an earthquake based on land.

One of the reasons they know about this fault that only slips every 275 years or so is because of a drowned forest where the coast dropped a few feet. That sort of thing causes tsunamis. When I have read about this fault before, tsunamis were mentioned.

ETA: Frequency of quakes from this fault is more like every 300 to 500 years. As I recall carbon dating of the drowned forest was cross referenced with an account of a tsunami recorded in Japan around 1700. So yeah, it's gonna cause a tsunami.

In the response of "not much aloha", I have tried and tried to show aloha to these individuals as they leave their trash everywhere they go, if no restroom available they sh$& in your doorway, drive like idiots making a break from hell, etc. etc..
Some people just don't get it, or feel they are above it because they have more money than a lot of others.
I guess I have reverted to if I give aloha, they can return aloha. Otherwise I no longer have time in my day to waste on them.
