Hawaii Last Again

One dollar in Hawaii is worth 84 cents, the least in all the 50 states.

Not surprising given the "anti-everything" crowd that keeps getting their way.

I think it is all too easy to shortchange real factors that would make the costs of everything in Hawaii more than elsewhere in order to serve up one liners that will get a rise from those that would take the bait. But, no matter, one liners meant to excite emotional responses is the stock 'n trade of the rags that serve the less discerning amongst us. Really, it doesn't take a genius to find many reasons, all of them practical, that ours would be high, even the highest, among the 50 states.

But hey, I am sure there's some sort of nefarious boogeyman somewhere in there and will look forward to folks bringing him out and passing the pour buggah around. "Anti-everything," oh come on, I am sure you can be more creative than that.

How is Costco so much cheaper on everything? Are they losing money in Hawaii?

There are obvious practical reasons, most having to do with the isolated location, for our cost of living to be higher than the mainland. On the other hand, there are regulatory and other government created factors that make it higher that it absolutely has to be. The Jones Act immediately comes to mind, but that is only the most obvious.

Many independent observers have come to the conclusion that we pay more and get less from our unionized state and local governments than most other states. One even rates us dead last in return on taxpayer investment:

It takes less fuel to barge stuff than it does to move it in a truck or a train. "In theory" an item produced in California should cost less for us to get than it does on the East coast of the USA.

Captive audience. You can't just drive to another jurisdiction that works better for you.

the stats are not for us, they are for Oahu... Oahu is 80% of 'Hawaii'

ie this BS ... lol

• Personal income per capita: $54,565 (16th highest)

• Income adjusted by cost of living: $41,353 (5th lowest)

• Median home value: $617,400 (the highest)

thus.... • Value of a dollar: $0.84 (the lowest)

might have alot to do with all the foreign $$ spent here too ????

LOL. A helluva lot, and it's all on the upside.

I'm guessing that the 84 cents to a dollar doesn't apply in the least to most posters here because their cost of housing is dirt cheap compared to the rest of Hawaii, or anywhere else in the country for that matter.
