How could there ever be an issue with:
State Conservation area
with a special lease to an university
with buildings owned and operated by international consortiums
only accessible by a county maintained (but not owned) road
on Hawaiian Homestead lands?
You’d almost think they make it up as they go along?

Exactly -- public lands are subject to additional rules/regulations.
State could solve this problem by selling the land to a private entity. State also owns enough land to connect the upper access road to the highway without crossing DHHL.
Ironically, DHHL has leased 380010070000 to Insite, which company deploys cell towers. The tower installation is reached via Mauna Kea Access Road. I thought the mountain was sacred, and nothing should ever be built thereon? Especially tall, ugly technology artifacts?

Last week I spoke with someone who attended the Keaau small rocket spaceport meeting some months ago. She said a woman stood up, held her cell phone so she could record video of her comment to the presenters and attendees:

Not that I was ever a big fan, but Green is now on my "do not vote for" list. The panderers seem to be coming out of the woodwork like termites in swarm mode.

What difference would it make? The protectors already ignore any "due process" that they don't agree with. I can just see it:
"Well, the vote needed to be 2/3 majority, so put it on the ballot again next year."
"Well, the vote needs to only include Hawaiians of sufficient blood quanta, haole votes shouldn't be counted."
"Well, referendum voting isn't Hawaiian, it's something the illegal occupying governement does, so it we don't think the answer is relevant."
I've also seen it suggested that TMT should be built on a recycled location after some other telescope has been decommissioned. Pretty sure this won't satisfy the protectors either. Just like the legal challenge "because they didn't pay the required bond", I'm willing to bet that a bond issue won't satisfy the protectors.
If the TMT ends up moving elsewhere, I really really really hope they sue the State, County, UH, DHHL, and everyone else. Even though my taxes will go up to pay for it.

I’ve been over on another social network the last few days, posting links to the poll showing 72% Native Hawaiian support TMT. Most refuse to believe it, some accept a poll was conducted but hypothesize the many reasons it was probably flawed, based on misreading the methodology. I’ve seen many rabbits pulled out of a hat with nothing up their sleeve. Almost all continue to believe most Hawaiians oppose the TMT, even when I ask if that’s based on another poll they know about?
If they switch the argument and/or discussion to colonization and repression of the Hawaiian people, I agree with them. Asking if it didn’t really start in 1893, but in 1819 when the Hawaiian religion was outlawed? It doesn’t seem as if anyone wants to decommission the churches though, remnants of the missionaries, which is where banning Hawaiian culture, hula, chants, language, dress (or lack of) started. Most are OK with that, blaming “the power structure” of business and government, but not the churches.

This is crazy. How long are they going to allow the protesters to block roads and park on the highway. Someone is going to get killed or seriously injured on Saddle Road during the "peaceful protest".
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Government should just close the Saddle Road for a few days - cars can leave Mauna Kea but not return. Allow access only to the military base folks, law enforcement and telescope staff. Wait till protesters get hungry and leave. Allow only construction vehicles back in. Then block off access road to all but construction and telescope staff. It'll be an inconvenience for a bit, but the problem will be solved.
Of course, local and state government have a policy of taking no responsibility for anything and holding no one accountable for unlawful activity/incompetence, so I suspect the protests will continue indefinitely and TMT will say "The heck with this.." and move on. Protesters will claim victory and the state/county will shrug their shoulders and bemoan the lack of business investment and employment/education opportunities for local keiki.
