TMT construction begins Monday 15 July
a place where people expect or receive few services

Funny, I just got my property tax bill. I wonder what that pays for, exactly? Overtime so the police can watch the protestors block the road?

The kia'i have shown that they are pa'a in their commitment to protecting Mauna Kea. No show of force can overcome the power of aloha 'aina - Tulsi

While I agree restraint is preferable at this time, and would have an even greater value if both sides conducted themselves in a non-confrontational manner (instead of just one side), I think there is some level of force which could overcome the protesters. Not all that much if truth be told.

Jon, ironyak and reni,

11 of the 13 telescopes on Mauna Kea are operating or would be without the current protest. The two that aren't are the Caltech Submillimeter Telescope (CSO) and the UH Educational Telescope. The CSO is currently going through the EIS process and they hoped to be finished sometime this year, although they've run into a glitch, so may be delayed by a few months. After that, dismantling is expected to take about one year.

I don't know what's going on with the UH telescope. The EIS and dismantling process should be faster as it's a fairly small structure and I believe doesn't even have a telescope inside the dome.

The operating telescopes are Keck (counts as two), Subaru, Gemini, IRTF, UKIRT, JCMT, SMA, UH 88-inch, CFHT and the VLBA.

HNN has an very good ~11min interview with TMT external relations where they state their commitment to building on Mauna Kea and hope that some greater good of addressing historic injustices can also be achieved.

Interesting point raised that if the TMT leaves, all the other issues still remain here.

PS - Thanks TomK for the decommissioning details.

Tom,
what are they going to do with that CSO dish when they decommission? Scrap? That 10M dish sure would look nice in my backyard.

Good question, I have absolutely no idea what the plan is for the dish. I'll ask and get back to you.

Do you by any chance know what the "glitch" is on the CSO & what entity is financially responsible for the dismantling of each ? ...
.Was there an agreement in the lease to return the environment to a state as previously found prior to construction?

Again, Thank You!

The news lady asks him if someone of the protesters gets sick or injured or dies, would the TMT accept responsibility? Say what? Is she serious? The protesters choose to be there, then they'll need to accept the responsibility for that choice. If the older protesters can't handle the cold, they could always go back down. If someone decides to go on a hunger strike and starves to death it's on them.
