Access to Mauna Kea
#71
I doubt it’s legal to bury anybody up there

When opihikao was posting she said some of her relation were buried on Mauna Kea. If I remember correctly (not 100% certain on this but you can search her posts with a few keywords) they were placed below the summit, it was a practice from decades ago and farther back, and I was never clear if it was an entire person, or bones from a grave site carried up the mountain and placed under an ahu.

Front-line info from HPD about the day of arrests and maybe why there weren't more.

Ironyak, I think you hit on an interesting point. Though maybe what you call lawlessness is civil disobedience turned into lawlessness by the government's inaction.

Had the county/state played along and arrested the protesters it would have been clearly disobedience met with the rule of law, which in turn might have given rise to greater support for the resistance, as you pointed out happened with Rosa. As it is the theatrical arrest of the kupuna had a large impact but nowhere near what seeing hundreds hauled off to jail would have. Maybe the state anticipated as much and nipped it in the bud by not playing into that hand. This way the protesters are self contained out in the middle of nowhere without any real impact on the community as a whole, and can be seen, as you suggest, as just a bunch of lawless folks clogging a road.

Will this tactic work? Will the protesters gain the support they need or will their standing diminish as time goes by? I don't fully understand the power of social media, but sense without it they risk being seen as unhappy folks in a road in the middle of nowhere. But still dignitaries come, Tulsi being the most recent, and add their names to the growing list of support that could reach a tipping point

Front line info from HPD

The plan was to arrest protestors and clear the road. No one knows who changed the plan, but an officer said he believes it was political:

"I think if they kept to the original plan, it probably would have been solved already," said (Sgt. Malcolm) Lutu.

Probably.

I suspect if DOCARE were removed from the equation things would be a little different right now.

Of course lawlessness is caused by the government's inaction - it's their sworn duty to uphold the laws. When they don't, and some animals get treated more equal than the others, everyone else on the farm starts to consider new creative options to get ahead. Laws, or the lack thereof, are for everyone, right?

towards what exactly?

Just a matter of time before someone tries something. I can hardly wait.

Oahu residents are already claiming that Sherwood Forest is "sacred land like Mauna Kea".

If my land is sacred, will OHA pay my property taxes?

Classic glinda.
The generic danger, from an unnamed person or group, who will take an unspecified action at a mysterious time in the future, and we should all fear for our lives, immediate family, and pets.

Mauna Kea burial comment from ophikao:

P.S. Forgot to mention, our ohana has Kupuna iwi on Mauna Kea, just for the record. Kahuna Nui, Ali'i, and Kupuna (most recent burial was 1981). Locations are not discussed, nor known (except by the chosen ones). FWIW.

FYI I scattered some ashes near the rocks at Hapuna, so check with me first if you want to do anything on the beach.
