This article says the lightning was 16 nautical miles northeast of Kapoho.

It didnt show up on the lightning detection network at 16miles they marked the strikes at least 100+ miles away. A lot of people didnt hear it.
Im not saying some may have been closer. but my windows would have rattled out of the frames had the action in the video be 20 miles away.

The sound of thunder only travels 10 miles or so. The fact that some could hear thunder (I heard it myself,faintly from mt View) would indicate that the storms cells were within the ten to 15 mile range extending North and Eastward for quite some distance.

Thunder was pounding up in Honomu during that storm, visibly shook large glass sliding doors...

I gave up with cell phone lightning strike apps when I realized how inaccurate they are in Hawaii. I don't think it's so much the app, it's where they get the data from. The Mauna Kea Weather Center used to show where lightning strikes were occuring around the islands but then they were asked to pay an extortionate amount of money to keep receiving the data, so they didn't.

Lots of lightning north and north-east of Hilo tonight (29 Feb/1 Mar). Right now it looks as though it's heading off to the west but looked as though Hamakua took a bit of a hit.
