With all of the recent rain, the Wailuku River and Rainbow Falls are flowing at full capacity. Two guys who bill themselves as “professional kayakers” (good work if you can get it) decided why not take the plunge 80 feet over the falls? DLNR said the pair didn’t first get their kayak-over-a-waterfall permit so they may face fines, but then allowed, maybe they won’t.

To their credit, they tried to get a permit, but nobody makes a urinal that can be installed on a kayak.

I would like to say “only in Hawaii” but I’m not sure that’s true. California requires permits for practically everything and adds ridiculous fees to get them.

Big difference: the permitting process is responsive and timely; inspections result in a punchlist. In most jurisdictions, a homeowner is allowed to work on their own house -- even if they're not a contractor licensed for that work.
