I am backing HOTPEanon's story as the most likely, and most local.

Shell has announced plans to withdraw from Russian oil and gas and close all its service stations in the country.
The company will immediately stop buying Russian crude oil on the spot market and not renew term contracts. It will also change its crude oil supply chain to remove Russian supplies, but said this could take weeks to complete and would lead to reduced throughput at some of its refineries.
Analysts credit a boycott of Shell products on the Big Island of Hawaii for exerting the necessary political and economic pressure that forced this change of course by the mega multinational corporation.
In other news, a naked man was seen protesting something at the Pahoa roundabout. Film at 11.

I will never understand why people in Hawaii think we should suffer extra for something happening halfway around the world that’s not our business, let alone the US as a whole. If Europe won’t suffer for the mess in their back yard why should we? I guess we can look forward to oil in Hawaii coming from some other unsavory country with terrorist or humanitarian crises ties, cause it sure as hell won’t be coming from North America for some reason that is beyond me…

When you put in like that, the 15 gallons of ethanol free 89 octane gas I bought at Puna Kai for $4.99 a gallon was unbelievable cheap. Considering the drilling, refining, shipping and other difficulties encountered.
Wouldn’t an EV powered by geothermal electricity from right down the road in Pahoa make more sense?

That sounds like a great idea! Better yet if you run it off solar… did you buy yours? Maybe you can convince the necessary parties to expand geothermal to cover more then 30%? The electric is going to go up for now. Hopefully you can donate to help the poorest members of our community, the poorest in Hawaii and some of the poorest in the US, they will need some help to buy Brand new $50K EVs, they don’t have enough income for tax credits. I unfortunately can’t get an EV pickup for my work yet… that means it costs me $20 to drive to Hilo now, which I have to do all the time, cost more soon. I suspect your solution to a real problem that is hurting real people is totally short sighted and completely lacking in empathy for those who have it much much harder then us.

Shortsighted yes, but not me, the lawmakers bowing to a few protestors could have looked ahead. We might have had geo electric decades ago powering all of the Big Island, the tech was there. We had solar panels on the White House in the 1970’s, the tech was there. We had an electric car in 1890. Imagine if Tesla had built a Tesla. Nobody would drive a gas car now. Puna beaters would be electric today.
I have no empathy for shortsighted lawmakers or shortsighted protestors.

Battery storage was a joke until recently. Solar panels on the white house were for heating water. Who knows how well they actually worked also.

Personally, I think generating power from sunshine is never a joke. More like a miracle.
But then again, if you trace it back all carbon based fuels, like coal and oil, are derived from solar.
