Just spoke to a good friend who runs a charter school who knew him. He most recently was a bus driver for HAAS in Puna, and everyone (teachers, admin etc.) liked him, and everyone is of course shocked. Crazy sad.

I guess court today was a rehash of everything. Furthermore, in order to get any compensation, the State has to have the conviction reversed or vacated based on "actual innocence."

Or, pardoned on actual innocence. The case was just dismissed with time served.

At this point why keep fighting the inevitable.

And now, with the naming of the suspect thru the DNA testing which they knew was from an "unidentified suspect" since day 1, yet Pauline rats out the Schweitzer brothers and then the 3 of them, facing lifetimes in prison - never name the 4th suspect? Never once during the younger brother's confession and plea deal? And no other person's DNA was ever found?

Let's face it - it's over.

The Police screwed this up from the beginning to not arresting Lauro as well as the Prosecuting Attorney's office.

Time to cut the taxpayers losses and just do what has to be done.

Coconut wireless tells me all three were real scumbags, especially Pauline. Also that there was a name floating around among locals for the true killer for years ... and it was wrong.

And it just keeps getting worse. The current county prosecutors are still trying to pin something on the Schweitzer brothers and Frank Pauline, despite the vacated convictions of the brothers:

There is also some scathing criticism of the police handling of Lauro:

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2024/07/3...rocedures/

The second piece may be behind a paywall, but it basically states that the DNA expert who cracked the case says the cops already had enough DNA evidence on Lauro without doing the swab. Bringing him in for that and questioning alerted him and led to his suicide.

I’m thinking that the Hawaii News Now headline sums up the current state of this case the best:

“Grasping At Straws”

There is just no substantial evidence that directly links the brothers or Pauline other than convicted and already in prison at the time criminals looking for a better deal to lessen their own punishments which, in exchange for their testimony, were granted.

At any event, even if all three were the pure scum of the earth, they still don’t deserve to be sent to prison for a crime that they didn’t commit. The “coconut wireless” clearly was the main prosecutor in this case.

At this point all this case is doing is to embolden today’s criminals to ignore the police, perhaps even engaging them into a fight that would possibly end up hurting innocent people and/or the police and/or the criminals themselves.

I’d also say that the premise being floated that the 2 brothers and Pauline did ram her bike, beat her, transported her to the location where they beat her again and then left her, without leaving one spec of their own DNA and then happy go lucky Lurio comes along and rapes her leaving his DNA all over the place is as preposterous as one could get.

A little more about Lauro, he married, had a child, hung out with a fishing buddy:

Last minute motion to Hawaii Supreme Court today to keep HCP from releasing details on Lauro investigation - Kubota looks and sounds like he's quite disgusted at all of this too.

"What are you going to do, prosecute this dead guy?"
