Hawaii’s DOE - First No Buses, now No Payroll!!

You wonder just how far past gross incompetence we’ve become. First no buses, and now 377 teachers not paid on payday. While most were made whole by other means, how can the payroll for our teachers be screwed up?

In states like California, you’re “on the clock” for each hour you remain unpaid from the time you’re supposed to be paid. 

Suggestion to DOE: ADP Payroll Services.

Hmm...last year the company I work for changed their payroll system. We had issues for at least six months after that change with being paid accurately. Luckily, most of our pay issues dealt with not being paid per diem or expenses on time.

I wonder what the issue was in the case? Why would there be a problem now? What changed?

The idea that everything works 'as expected' every time is a foreign to me. Snafus happen, have always happened. And, ya know, it's another example of how aloha works. Have a problem, be patient, expect it to be worked out, bring aloha when can. But then, plenty kine folks from afar haven't figured that out.

As to what happened.. CB reported... 

Over 300 teachers started the new school year without pay due to delays with processing payroll forms..

...“We are examining our onboarding process that resulted in the delay,” Ching said in an emailed statement. “Fixing the process and improving oversight of the process are high priorities.”

In the meantime, DOE will deliver $2,000 checks to affected employees on Monday to help tide them over until the problem is resolved..


Which makes it seem reasonable, acknowledged and compensated for by the DOE.. ie, it's nothing more than a snafu..

As to Aloha.. it seems plenty folks have no idea. When asked I recommend Nana Veary's explanation, and her examples in her telling in Change We Must.. which last time I checked (a few weeks ago) was still available at Basically Books..

Can teachers explain this concept to their landlord, bank when checks bounce, credit card payments are late, mortgage payment is due? Or will they be stuck with late payment fees, penalties, and added interest charges and a bad FICO score?

Of course teachers can explain this concept.  This is the new era where generic platitudes are an acceptable salve to real world suffering.  Expect Malama Market to begin accepting aloha in exchange for nutritive staples.  The upside is that training teachers first on how this will work going forward, better equips them to help their students get with the program.

In other words, I have every confidence that our teachers, here in Hawaii, are capable of explaining to landlords how the effects of this glitch will affect their landlords' pocketbooks.  It is well known that in some parts of the mainland, teachers are less capable of explaining the difference between nouns and transitive verbs.

I know it doesn't serve the "schools bad" narrative, but this onboarding glitch effects about 400 teachers out of about 13,000 (so about 3%) and the missed checks were either covered directly by the school, where possible, or through $2000 advances from DOE today. No one should be missing a mortgage or credit car payment from this hiccup. Seem like a strange level of "world is going to hell in a handbasket" catastrophizing happening here on Punaweb.

Be more like W.N. Wahine - assume the best and ask questions?

As to why it's news, probably the fact that it is unprecedented and a bit surprising so worth a TV blurb, and also ragebait gets clicks? Looks at all the !! it's generated already. More controversy, more clicks, more ads served. Some people just want to have somewhere to focus all their anger and discontent, so the market will provide and profit.

I’m thinking that the biggest antithesis to Aloha is NOT paying people for the work performed, on time and correctly. 

Yes, I can understand an error here or there, but to miss the payroll of 377 employees is inexcusable under any circumstance. 

As well as downright insulting to the employees. In as much as I personally feel that this entire issue is the cause of a top heavy management bureaucracy and yes, in most cases, other means were taken to get these teachers paid, but still, at the end of the day, this is completely inexcusable under any sense whatsoever.

And those who think this is clickbait, or any other way of making this a non issue, really don’t have much Aloha to begin with nor understand what the true meaning of Aloha really is.

And I’d love to extend a big “Aloha” welcome to our new moderator! I’m sure that Rob will ensure that you are paid properly and, more importantly, on time, every time!

There’s really not much to tell.
Nothing on Punaweb will change, other than there will be two sets of eyes reading and moderating the forum.  If the rules are broken or ignored you will be reminded in one way or another, perhaps sooner than in the recent past.

Fortunately this means almost all of your posts will remain unaffected.
So please, carry on.

I'm sure your personal indignation will go far in resolving the matter.

DOE hit a first-time ever glitch in payroll and HTSA got to raise some stink over it, which is what you want your union to do. As long as the pay advances get to those who need them, things will keep on keeping on, in that unique way they do in Hawaii.

Then again, maybe you have a point at how unexceptable it is and we should use an emergency tax to hire more accountants for the DOE to make sure this never happens again... let's say higher taxes on second properties and retirees as those assets are looking ripe for the harvest. Won't someone please think of (the staff and infrastructure needed to pay the teachers of) the children?  ;)
