I had been told (canʻt remember by whom) that we would eventually receive our deed after paying off our house, but it takes six months to a year. We paid off our house about a year and a half ago and have received nothing. Is there something we should do? I imagine I would have to talk to someone at the county building but I have no idea who that would be. We have an e-copy of the deed we got at closing and thatʻs it. Should I pursue this? Any ideas who/where? Mahalo.

You have to contact the State Bureau of Conveyances.

You can set up an online account and search for documents for a fee or try call them.
Are you sure the mortgage company filed the "Release of Mortgage?
That SHOULD trigger the Bureau to send a clear deed, but maybe not.
ETA: I guess they don't auto send the deed after payoff. From the website:
Q: I paid off my mortgage so how do I get a copy of my deed?
A: You will not get a copy of your deed when you pay off your mortgage. You should have received a copy of your deed during the closing of the original purchase of your property. When your mortgage has been paid off, it is important to obtain a copy of your “Release” document issued by the lender or their servicing company. If you did not, you can order copies of these documents from our website.

Okay, Julie. You got me and Iʻm eating humble pie as I acknowledge your gracious answer to my question which I had to un-ignore you to view. Your answer was very helpful and I thank you for that. Of course when I went to the website and had to set up an account, I got nowhere. I tried three times, entering the password and confirming it, and then verifying the confirmation email. But each time I got a message telling me I used an incorrect password when I tried to log in so I gave up for now. Iʻll call them later. I do appreciate your help however. Mahalo.

At any event, I do sympathize with the State of Hawaii website - it can be temperamental at times. I have had luck using Firefox, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't with Edge.
I also know that some of the websites for the State and County MAY not like a VPN - in that the website wants a true-blue Hawaii IP address coming in. Also, if I use my home Hawaiian Telcom Fiber internet I have no problems, but if I use my Verizon iPhone on Verizon data as a hotspot - it won't work.
Knowing the State, the website is probably looking for the users AOL browser on a dial up connection!
