Protests in Hilo (May 17th next) & elsewhere in Hawaii - June 14th in the works
#71
Looking at the video of the 4/19/2025 event, it would appear that the majority of the younger generations, locals, Hawaiians, etc. also stayed home and wrote letters. If "the regime" only cares about overcooked white fish, then why is it they are the main ones protesting (based on video evidence of the scene)?

Iraq was a stupid war and I protested it in a number of ways.

What I find fascinating is how aligned some of us are but somehow we've become convinced that we are on some opposing sides that can only progress by winning complete surrender in some epic contest that never ends.

Seems silly. Just get out and vote, respect the will of the people, and play the hand you are dealt. This divide and conquer stuff we've been falling for is getting really old IMHO.

spark of revolution

The protests I’ve attended or read about generally ignite, sizzle, flame up, die down, crackle, burn bright when fuel is added, more like a long burning campfire than New Years Eve fireworks.

And speaking of fireworks, if people say there were more fireworks or less fireworks than last year, does anyone really count?  If there were 3% less fireworks than previously, does that infer this whole New Years Eve thing may be on the wane?

on the wane

While not necessarily causal, there does appear to be a strong correlation between the size of the protests and the cost of eggs which also dropped by over 50%.

I totally agree. One guy told everybody exactly what he was going to do.

The other guy mumbled a bunch while being coached from the sidelines, crashed and burned when he had to ad lib it and then anointed a successor that people didn't want.

A majority voted for the one guy and it's the fault of the people who nominated an unqualified guy and allowed someone who wasn't nominated to run. Try finding someone who doesn't need to be in a nursing home next time.

Yes.
Perhaps instead of peacefully standing on the roadside in Hilo waving signs with messages of our discontent, and donating food to the hungry we could follow the example from a kinder simpler time.

Like in Jan 2021 when “respect the role of the people” played out with millions of dollars of damage to government property, injury to police, and death?

I think the folks in East Hawaii have the better idea.

I do have to give them props for not torching Teslas like their counterparts on the mainland and for not burning down major cities like their mainland peeps in 2020.  Way to keep it real overcooked white fish!

It's strange that you've seen one video and think that snapshot captures the totality of the situation. Having actually been there, I know there were children, young adults, and locals participating as well. Am I surprised that largely retired folks with a history of political activism are most likely to vote or make it to a protest - not really, as they have the time and interest. In my conversations though they tended to recognize that Russia started the war with Ukraine, that Trans folk exist and have rights, that the lives of Palestinians matter, that tariffs are paid by local importers and consumers not the country exporting the goods, that everyone is entitled to due process, and that they prefer their taxes be spent on local schools, libraries, health clinics, and universities rather than as tax breaks for the wealthy. So while it was a hot one out there, none of them struck me as being overly cooked.

As for the distinction between a regime and an administration, this 2017 article does a good job outlining the differences. It's wild that so many of the points raised about Trump 1.0 (ticked off Nato ... Picked fights with Canada, Mexico ... Cabinet meeting was a scene straight out of Pyongyang and not Washington... etc) apply equally to the second go around.

Punatang - Iraq was a stupid war and I protested it in a number of ways.
So you also see protest as being part of playing the hand you're dealt - hopefully you'll find a cause to care about and exercise that right again as needed. Many other people already have.

Well they say a picture is worth a thousand words which is good because apparently no one wrote any.

As for the 247 people at the moment in time that someone did bother to video document, it was what it was. Unless "the totality" includes invisible antifa ninjas or Menehunes?

It was only scheduled for two hours.  Did people protest in shifts due to the extreme heat? I did see a few people that were not on Medicare. True that. Thanks for explaining why the demographics are as they appear in the video shared by Wahine.

I'm reminded of the well known philosophers question:

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

I never understood the philosophical meaning behind this question. Of course it made a sound; it's just that no one was there to hear it. How would it not make a sound? Turning it around, how would someone know a tree fell if no one saw it or even knew the tree existed in the first place? To me, worrying about this concept is just a waste of time. It just ends up going in circles because reality is being put aside.

Really? I didn't see attempting to extort law firms, universities and foreign allies, flouting courts and crashing the economy on the agenda.
