I'm reminded of the well known philosophers question:

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

I never understood the philosophical meaning behind this question. Of course it made a sound; it's just that no one was there to hear it. How would it not make a sound? Turning it around, how would someone know a tree fell if no one saw it or even knew the tree existed in the first place? To me, worrying about this concept is just a waste of time. It just ends up going in circles because reality is being put aside.

Good points TomK. Say for example someone is around with a dog when a tree falls in Puna, and the resulting vibrations are all above 25 kHz and below 40 kHz.

Did it make a sound?

Well, yes, of course it did. Vibrations make sound. I was aiming more at the philosophical question, which makes little sense to me. For others, I'm sorry if that answer doesn't address the issue of keeping it Puna-related, but I don't think the forum rules say posts need to be related to Puna; they should be Hawaii-related.

randomq - Given that this was a self-inflicted wound, I think we should ensure that the Big Island party members and businesses that supported this idiocy suffer it the worst. We should make a list of businesses to boycott and businesses to support. Maybe a "no-hire" list of local deniers. Many have outed themselves.

Maybe this fits the bill? Several local businesses listed, nothing I immediately recognized, but never hurts to be better informed as to what your dollars support.

Speaking of freedom of association and collective action, local May Day event set for 3-5pm on Thursday May 1st, at the Bayfront near the King Kamehameha Statue.

Thanks ironyak! I think we're going to have to combine many resources to get effective coverage. Probably creating a database that includes people and supporting evidence, and a website to search and allow people to contest a listing or submit new ones.

Sources like this: https://www.fec.gov/data/receipts/indivi...=processed&committee_id=C00003418&contributor_zip=96720&contributor_zip=96749&contributor_zip=96760&contributor_zip=96771&contributor_zip=96778&two_year_transaction_period=2022&two_year_transaction_period=2024&two_year_transaction_period=2026

Can be cross referenced with local business ownership databases, social media posts, etc...

I'm seriously considering coding it up and scraping and mining the data to get it started...

Public voter records don't have party, but could be used to estimate our database's coverage, or as a starting point for automated searches...

We could probably get a huge head start, here in Hawaii, by just mimicking the Chinese system:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Credit_System

They re-appropriate our IP constantly.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I think vibrations are vibrations. Sound.. light.. any frequency.. requires a receiver to turn them into those things. Otherwise they are just vibrations. And sure you could say light is there regardless.. but really we don't know, because before we can even imagine it we're receiving.. ie converting the vibration to whatever we're experiencing..

We say a leaf is green but in fact it isn't. It's all a matter of how we perceive.. receive and arrange the "light" we "see." Green is the light not absorbed by the leaf.. to a differently programmed receiver it could be entirely different. Geez, it could be sound.

Welcome to Punaweb Punaman. I don't know if your friends did any good but at least they did pretty well.
