Protests in Hilo elsewhere in Hawaii - June 14th next
But whereʻs the young folks? Itʻs their world getting messed with.

I also find that to be a mystery more often than not.  I read diatribes that accuse wasteful boomers who burned up all the oil, dug up all the coal and metal, of bringing us to our current predicament.  But then, most younger folk I know are flying, driving, buying like it’s the end of the world as we know it, and they feel fine flying, driving, & buying far more than I, a boomer, ever did.

A generalization to be sure, but it’s not a matter of personal discretionary preference anymore, we’re all in this together.
There is hope for you poor people.

That is hilarious, Obie.
I wonder if this would allow for sick days to be taken?

Starting to think that if he suggested breathing oxygen is good for you, 20% of the libs would try to stop breathing?
kalianna - But whereʻs the young folks?
Checking TikTok trends and hooking up on Hinge? (You know, having a life ;) Young folks don't tend to vote in high percentages - that's nothing new and Hawaii isn't any different in that regard, so political rallies aren't a big draw. I think the speaker from the League of Women Voters highlighted that Hawaii was second-to-last in voter turn out for 2024 so the question could also be: where's everyone on election day?

Younger folks that I talk to tend to be either politically disenchanted (doomers on various intractable issues, so why not live like it's the end of the world - just might be) or have more extreme views on both ends of the spectrum. As such, those that are engaged are either bro-culture acolytes deep in the Rogan manosphere or somewhere left of Bernie prepping to eat the rich and build a new world in the shell of the old. Given this, the centrist Democrats hold little appeal. Maybe when the Dems complete their generational turn-over and take up a more progressive stance on the affordability crisis, climate, Gaza, protecting rights for trans people and immigrants, etc we might see higher youth engagement with conventional politics.

However, when things pop-off, young folk make up the majority of street movements (e.g. BLM, Battle in Seattle, etc). So while Hilo is unlikely to immediately have the protest culture or demographics of Portland, when/if matters reach that point it'll be the youth taking up the charge (kinda has to be as the olds' knees aren't up for it anymore ;)

I can save them the research dollars and point out that many people, poor or not, aren't enthusiastic about having healthcare and food assistance cut while grifters in charge accept millions in bribes and shit on the constitution. Thankfully, Hawaii's politics and reps aren't in thrall to that cult - for those that are, maybe Ohio is where you better belong?

I take it from your replies that you consider cuts to Medicaid for people in Puna, funding for clinics in Puna, assisted living or nursing home care for retired residents of Puna, and supplemental food assistance for children …

is just one big joke?

You are putting words in my mouth. I stated nothing about that at all.

My response is solely directed to the article about the Ohio lawmaker wanting to study TDS as an official mental health issue. It seems to have some merit.

In other words the geriatric crowd isn't going to change anything.. but hey, when we were young!

I originally asked about the demographics because of a sense that politics is a fading fad.. an old person's sport. We were raised on a different system.. we all went to the same town hall (the nightly news) and as such our perspectives had similarities regardless of their differences. Whereas now, with a myriad of opposing sources all clamoring for attention the opposition can be molded into any boogyman one wished to stuff in their closet.. and who cares what they think?

Unfortunately excess heat discharged into the atmosphere doesn't care what anyone thinks.. it's just heat. And all the 'sources’ vying for attention don't concern themselves with the consequences of the directions they promote.. as long as their advertisers keep coughing up the big bucks why should they? And the ice keeps melting.

What I wonder is what will happen when the jet setting era has passed (which it will, undoubtedly soon), will the Obies of the island go back to Ohio or hunker down here? My bet is they’re gone..
TDS as an official mental health issue. It seems to have some merit.

So you’re in favor of approving & spending government funds on this additional medical research? What about cutting Medicaid for your neighbors in Puna?

Them kine folks don't care about anyone but themselves Edge.. making sense is not a requirement.
Manao - In other words the geriatric crowd isn't going to change anything
Change things - probably not. Help hold the center for as long as possible - hopefully so. Having been around this bloc a time or two, I've found that harm mitigation is also an important and necessary strategy, as sometimes the status quo is better than the alternative. In time, people with sufficient motivation (not there yet IMO - will get worse before it gets better) of all ages learn to engage and work all the tools available to them, from the soap box, to the ballot box, and so on. Ultimately though, if y'all had Ho Chi Minh to ultimately settle most of the political fights, lots of people currently may be counting on Ronald McDonald to do his part for America? One haupia pie and a side of liberation, please.

Given his current inability to read and comprehend several sentences at a time, it seems unlikely Obie is bound to make it to the end of the jet setting era, especially as new roadblocks and delays to the energy transition crop up here in Hawaii. I'll never understand why a set of geriatric half-wits thought they were well positioned for a time of enormous political, social, and environmental instability, but that's what they voted for. I guess when/if things get to the point of having to cast the "useless eaters" into the compost bin of history some may learn a bit too late the value of supporting a culture based in Aloha and with some inherent regard for kapuna.

As you said, physics don't care about feelings or beliefs - only actions. Hopefully, more people can take the actions needed to improve the lives, stability, and well-being of their community, and help avert the obvious train wreck coming on the horizon from gaining yet more momentum today.
