Kilauea Eruption 12/23/24
Time to start discussing expanding this road's right shoulder for a long stretch before the park entrance.

Probably too late. The power lines from Volcano Village to Volcano Golf Course are in the process of being relocated. The first phase has been completed, tree topping. An additional lane on the right side of the highway would need to go where the new path of the power lines are located for several hundred feet before the park entrance, if I’m reading the map correctly:

Nah, I thought, since it was first suggested, that an expansion to the right, for southwest (Kau) bound traffic would be a hard sale because the terrain isn't all that stable.. as one gets up to the edge of the caldera. Note that on that stretch of the road the outer ring of the caldera, the last step, is but a few feet from the road as it is. You can see the wall if you look through the trees from the road. So, instead, the road could be physically expanded on the other side, there's plenty of room, and still when it's painted and all that give the additional lane to that side of the newly widened pavement.

But, still, at the rate something like this would take, as suggested years, the need will have lapsed. The eruption is, if nothing else, always in a state of change. And, as we've watched subtle changes between eruptive phases, we'll also see a change from this cyclic activity to something different, it's anyone's guess as to what, but it is inevitable none-the-less.

And still, it's a good idea in the long run no matter if in fact these type of traffic events happen at all.

Well this is a little different from what weʻve been seeing lately.

That was cool to see!

Glad it was a natural rock fall and not some mainland tourist peeking too far over the edge for a better view!

Interesting. Thanks for sharing this.

Although, I am not convinced it is, as the vid is titled, just a rockfall, slide. Although the video ends before all the atmospherics dissipate so we can not see the ground after the event, to compare it to before. So, I went back over today’s footage, and with a lot of passing precipitation only found a few opportunities to see the same in a similar light, and here is what it looked like today at about the same time as the event yesterday..

In this you can see the rock face, which was pretty pristine before the event captured in the video you brought to our attention, and it is now gouged with a debris fan at its base.

And while I was looking I came upon another rockfall..

This one looks like just that, a rockfall.

But if you go back and look at yesterday’s event it looks like more is happening there than just a collapse. Looking closely at its onset it may have indications of an initial uplift.. as if there was an actual eruption of sorts. And, using today's smaller event which had a distinct collapse profile yesterday’s is more energetic, more as if there was an ash column eruption for a few minutes.

Of course, there could be explanations that don’t involve a real eruption. A release of pent up heat for instance could be the driving force, the energy. But something is carrying a lot of ash into the air during that event. You can see it more graphically as the vid goes on, as the leading edge of the collapse falls away there is a steady point source of continual emission higher up that doesn’t move..

Anyways.. thanks again for sharing. I hope HVO has something to say as time goes by. I also imagine whatever this is it is not isolated, but rather the beginning of more to come. That entire rack face has taken a real beating.. all the heat and gas.. and being beaten by falling rocks.. and it can’t have been too stable to begin with..

As always.. lucky we live Hawaii.

Thereʻs an interesting deviation from the recent pattern. This is the most inflation weʻve seen between eruptions, and over the last 18 hours there has been slow deflation without eruption. Hmmmm.....
