Pohoiki in the Future Perfect Tense
#1
.    State Senator Joy San Buenaventura just released a public announcement about the Pohoiki boat ramp that included this statement:

"Frankly time showed that the army corps of engineers whom we consulted were wrong in that the current is unlikely to redeposit sand."

The fact that she's an attorney who used to be a judge explains the syntax, but how she got convinced -- before it has even opened -- that the channel isn't going to fill up with debris again is what's incomprehensible.   I give it six weeks to six months of usage before boat propellers start scraping bottom, and I haven't talked to anyone who's actually gone down to look at this sand sculpting experiment who thinks otherwise.  And that includes one of Pohoiki's most stalwart commercial fisherman, who has no plans to quit going out from Hilo.  His primary concern?  Launching from Pohoiki, going down to Halape for three nights, and then not being able to get in the clogged channel when he comes back with a full load.

We might, however, get a nice $9.1 million safe swimming area.

Seeing as football game analogies are the rave now in some political circles, I have to "throw a flag on the play" here.

First, Joy San Buenaventura is a State Senator, not a State Representative.

Secondly, after an exhaustive search, using "the Google," each of Buenaventura's various social media accounts, as well as her personal website and her government website, I did not find one link or post about this subject matter. I even used the AI Overlords to no avail. I even went so far as to try Grok, but it started screaming "nein, nein, nein" at me, so I just closed it up.

I did find past comments about Buenaventura discussing the Army Corp of Engineers being wrong on older erosion control projects concerning sand redeposition and beach nourishment efforts, but nothing as the OP is stating here.

Further, I find it hard to believe that Buenaventura would be trashing the project she and Greggor fought to get over 5 million dollars of State money for, as well as in attendance at all the "hoopla" events as this project got underway, but I could be wrong. Maybe she indeed said it, I just can't find any evidence of her saying it.

So maybe the OP could post a link to substantiate this claim?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Upon further review, I did find a link to the statement the OP attributed to Joy San Buenaventura.

Apparently, she has a "personal" Facebook page separate from her official Facebook page and spells her name differently on that personal page than her official page and as spelled on all other forms of MSM and social media.

Facebook

So, yes, she did make that statement. The Facebook post was made 3 days ago and as of me posting this clarification, has garnered no comments.

Further, the context of the comment, other than the comment itself, is not really explained and is also, quite frankly, very confusing. Is it her saying the Army Corp of Engineers was wrong that the current will redeposit the sand, or will NOT redeposit the sand, or is the comment her thinking that it won't?

At any event, spoken like a true politician!

Only time will tell.

"Frankly time showed that the army corps of engineers whom we consulted were wrong in that the current is unlikely to redeposit sand.
Its good to know that contractors expect dredging to be finished this year faster than expected and under budget. "

This looks like an opinion based on the changes down there since the eruption.

I agree and that is my opinion. No need to fact check me because it's based on my observations of the conditions . The sand has been mostly gone from that beach for several years. The ocean currents are washing it away leaving behind cobble. I have been driving down there at least twice a month on Sundays since the eruption.

Agreed - there has been no sand for quite some time - just more rocks.

It's also interesting that the large sand beach at former Kaimu (1/3 mile in front of Uncle Roberts) is gone.  That beach was there for at least a decade.  I noticed it disappeared about 3 years ago.  (my last visit there was 2 months ago).

Even if a beach does not abut safe swimming, it is nice to walk on.

Now that this Kalapana beach is gone, I'm less inclined to walk out there.  All the trees people planted out there are nice, but sheer cliff dropping into the ocean -- we have way too much of that in East Hawaii.  This is one reason  the Pohoiki project is so welcome.  Creating diverse terrain along the shoreline.

Also there are giant red ants on the path to Kaimu now. Never noticed them before, but I didn't stick around to investigate...

It appears my estimate on how long it will take for the channel at the Pohoiki boat ramp to become unnavigable was off by exactly six weeks.  It filled in before the facility was even open for use.

Some context here would probably help (looks like one of the side "walls" has slumped into the channel and/or alot of material got moved in? Image courtesy of HVERI) Was wondering what the plans were for future maintenance - as the slump/fill is on the opposite side of the water from the boat ramp, what's the path there for the heavy equipment with the berm having been removed?

Pohoiki boat ramp - no boats allowed, but at least you can swim in sheltered blue waters - may want to ask MarkD where he was on the night in question ;)

(ETA: looks like the channel narrowing has been there for several days already - Oct 12 vs Oct 10)
