Is there anyway to retrofit an existing but unused cesspool to a legal septic system?

Unused? I would think the hole would be a perfect place for the septic tank. It' couldn't hurt to ask a septic installer about this.

Well, the cesspool location might or might not be suitable for the septic tank. If it is a good location you might benefit from the hole being partially dug out... but that's about it. Cesspools are vertical holes, septic tanks need hortizontal holes. You can use some of the dig material to fill the lower part of the cesspool.
The benefit will be minor.

I did a conversion about 15 years ago in Kapoho.
The health department required the cesspool to be pumped out and then filled with sand. |
