Self-Storage on Big Island

There are some buildings in Hilo and Kea'au, so this might be an opportunity to update the topic. I will admit to being a hoarder. Until the movie, Monster, was released in 2003, I was not familiar with the idea of using self-storage as a "permanent" place for storing belongings. Some people are spooked by the concept of dark warehouses of junk, where renters store goods that they cannot bear to trash. One extreme example is presented in this youtube trailer from Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities ep. 1:

Assuming that you have been able to get over the social stigma of renting a self-storage unit, what are the best deals on the Big Island? There appear to be 10'x15' storage units available at monthly rates around $300/mo. I excluded introductory teaser rates under $200/mo. I will be staying away from Stor Quest.

I think you need to determine the value of your "hoarding" because at $3,600.00 bucks a year just to store it, what kind of cool NEW things could you buy instead?

At any event, a short video of my husband and I visiting our self storage unit:

The units in Shipman Industrial have been broken into many times over the past few years, as well as the newer facility in Pahoa.

The self storage in HPP was broken into some months ago too.
I knew someone who owned a self storage facility on the mainland.  He said it was like a license to print money.  Once people stored their items most rarely returned.  Credit cards were automatically charged every month.  Out of sight, out of mind.

If you’re storing possessions temporarily until you move here, build here, self storage might be a good idea.  Buying a shipping container, with a secure lock, once you’re on site is a good investment that pays for itself in a few years.

Since it seems like Punawebbers posting videos has become démodé, I'll just reference George Carlin's brilliant routine on "stuff".

The only storage I ever had was robbed. That is a lesson one does not forget, especially when the money paid to store the "stuff" amounts to more than the "stuff" was ever worth.  Never ever put your fourth grade schoolwork or anything else you can't replace in storage. JMO
