What is it? Where is it?

What, exactly, are people being asked to do other than turn up at the lookout at 9 am? It says it's a work day but doesn't explain what the work is.

Did you read kalianna's post? It does say for more info go to.. doesn't it?

Or, maybe you have poor comprehension skills? Or, even better, you just like being contrary.. see if you can sucker someone into posting something you can browbeat them over?

Which is it Tom?

Btw.. on the flier it clearly says if you got questions give 'em a call. Can you do that? Or, perchance, did your 'education' not include following directions?

I'll ask again. What work are the volunteers being asked to do?

To read the flier.

No, the work is not to read the flier. That's a ridiculous answer. I also read the flier, and that doesn't say what the work is. I've also called the number, and that just went to voicemail. So again, what work are they asking people to do?

As I mentioned, I called the number, and the voicemail was in Hawaiian. No problem there, but if you're asking for volunteers from a group of people who have never been to Waipio Valley and are scared of going there, and the job description has no description, then I see a problem.

I found the name of their farm on the flier, cut, pasted, Googled and the top link was to their website:
https://www.kuakanaka.com/klok

Which states:

These hands-on, culture-based, highly educational experiences immerse volunteer groups of no more than 25 people in six-hour Hawaiian language, culture and mālama ʻāina events at our ancient five-acre taro patch complex in historic Waipiʻo Valley.  Hoʻolaulima volunteers directly contribute to the regeneration of Waipiʻo's unique wetland environment and revitalize this once highly productive area. Hoʻolaulima literally means to cause cooperation. In our case, hoʻolaulima refers to our efforts to get many hands working together to manage, preserve, regenerate and revitalize Kapapa Loʻi o Kealiʻikuaʻāina and create a vibrant, self-sustaining, intergenerational loʻi and māla outdoor learning laboratory.

There are also numerous photos of volunteers at work.
It certainly would be useful for them to add a brief description of activities on their flyer as it is probably the first thing most people would ask.

(As another example illustrates, Paradise Plants sent out an email last week for their annual bare root plant sale.  After reading through it, I thought, did I miss the prices?  Read through it again, no prices.  A few days later they sent out a follow up email which noted - “Some of you have asked for prices.”)

Oh boy, it’s time once again to play, name that scope!

This one is a bit trickier in that it is not visible from outside the dome from most vantage points. And it is in such a tight space I have a hard time imagining its overlords traipsing visitors through regularly. But, unlike in its earlier days it is a state own facility, and as such maybe there's more access than in days gone by.

The interesting thing to note about this scope is that it is in a very tight space, so much so it was hard to get a view of the entire thing because there was nowhere to back up to. And, as such, this image is taken with a very wide lens (17mm on a 35mm camera). It is also, obviously, not one of the mega scopes we have these days, so has remained viable through upgrades in the technologies employed rather than through size.

There are all sorts of clues.. one is that this was once owned and operated by a foreign concern, and is now owned and operated by the State of Hawaii. And as such is our’s. We pay for it, the people that work there are paid with our tax dollars. The work they do, their job descriptions, are in service to us. And over time if someone doesn’t guess it right off I’ll reveal more.

And, of course, it would be only fitting that our “astronomer” bow out on this one. In fact I think he should just say nothing. No leading statements, no prompting others to do.. just sit back and empower others with his silence.

Please let others know when their empowered status ends.

After careful and long deliberation, as depicted here:

And then employing critical thinking skills, and most importantly, in between the lines reading, I'm going to guess:

The United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope, or UKIRT for short?

Bingo!

Do you want to try for a twofer?

Which scope is this one..

And btw, TomK, it was I, not Confucius, that coined the phrase, the wise man empowers others with his silence. A silence you would be best to keep considering how anything you say may lead to you breaking PW's own rules about exposing one's personal information. I mean, all things considered, you should sit this one out, brah.

What you originally posted was:

"The wise man empowers others with their silence."

The meaning is very different. You want people to shut up.

Ah, come on Jules, I would have thought this would have been an easy one. After all it isn't even hidden inside an obscuring dome, but right out there in front of God and the whole world to see. Although it is down its very own side street and not seen by those that take only the more beaten path. I have always loved visiting it, just standing in awe at its architectural majesty.

Visually, photographically, I love its lines, its arches, circles, as I do all the telescopes. They really are marvelous structures. I suppose that's built into me, as my father was an astronomer, who ended up pursuing his love for mathematics rather than a career in astronomical research. But as a kid I spent countless hours at the Hale Reflecting Telescope at Palomar which began, for me, a life long appreciation of the structures involved, as well as the science.

One last thing about the UKIRT. I find its new found owners, the State of Hawaii, us, to be such a refreshing change. The old guys have quite the sordid history of producing charlatans.. folks that claim to be what they are not. I even worked with a guy from there who wrote the text for a proposed book of mine whose working title was Mauna Kea: Pinnacle of the Pacific, that was produced under contract with the Bishop Museum (which during that time had shut down their publishing division over budgetary concerns), who went on about being an astronomer and it turned out he was just a librarian. Oddly enough that book, which I had assumed doesn't exist except for here in my office library, made its way into the collection of Monographs in the Center for Maunakea Stewardship Online Bibliographic Catalog

Anyways, as the sun rises here on another blistery winter morning it's easy to armchair it imagining that sun rise, as it is seen doing behind the latest in the "name that scope"

Any guesses?
