Kilauea Eruption 12/23/24
Even my potato of a phone camera on night mode can capture the glow from the Kurtistown area. Hopefully those with more skill and tools are going to be able to better frame the fortuitous alignment of events.

Good photo ironyak, the nighttime glow of a volcano in our backyard is unique.  Who needs AI cartoons when we have the real thing?

Here’s a daytime look at Episode 44’s plume from the parking lot of Prince Kuhio Mall.

And another from a camera facing AWAY from Kīlauea, as the plume curled northward.

The next eruption is days away, in the meantime here’s some recent research on Pele’s Hair.

But that process, which creates strands of Pele’s hair of different lengths, did not explain why Pele’s hair was sometimes found in bundles of hundreds, or even thousands, of aligned strands. Ed Llewellin, a volcanologist at Durham University in England, remembers finding one such formation on the Big Island of Hawaii. “I was 100 percent convinced it was a woman’s ponytail lying on the lava,” Dr. Llewellin said. “It was really quite shocking.”

A team led by Dr. Gillies and Dr. Llewellin investigated how bundles of aligned strands of Pele’s hair might form.

Cool!  Are there other cam systems like this on the island?

Never mind.. I see the other locations up at the top. Those are high quality.

Interestingly, even at its height, this phase has been much less volatile than the average in most of the previous events. And, seemingly, if the state it's in at the moment is any indicator, ie already losing a lot of its oomph, this one should follow the last in establishing a shorter duration period overall.

Not that we haven’t had a lot of shorter lived lower intensity events, put the norm overall for the last six plus months has been toward the more grand, longer lived higher volume bigger fountains than in the earlier phases, and now with the last event and this one maybe Pele's breaking the pattern.

A small eruption last night, alternating between the two vents, and some lava flow from time to time.  If you check the camera feeds this morning you can slide back and try 1 AM or 3 AM for some burbling and orange glow.

It’s flowing pretty good again now at 6:30 AM:
