Supposedly the world is a billion barrels short of oil and it will take a year of an open Hormuz strait to catch up. So, don't be surprised if gas prices don't drop much in the near future.

Those are rookie numbers - local experts are saying we have to get those up like Denmark before people will make better choices.

Anyone want to sign my petition for instituting a carbon tax?

Who are the local experts?  I wouldn't be surprised if they're correct that the price of gasoline needs to be way higher in order to put a major dent in demand.

How much of a carbon tax, and what would the money be used for?

(In my best Raiders of the Lost Ark tone) Local... Experts...

Well, if Denmark is the goal (imagine the 130 morning commute looking like this), then $10 a gallon would be the target, so let's say a 100% carbon tax. It takes like 100 gallons of gas to create one metric ton of CO2, so that extra $5 per gallon, would give us $500 which could be used to:
1) Maybe manage to pay for the costs to create natural systems, possible some Direct-Air-Capture tech if we're feeling bougie, to reabsorb that ton of CO2.
2) Or, and hear me out, it could be invested in promoting tourism to Hawai'i, which if we apply this carbon tax to aviation fuel (which we don't do in Hawai'i with our $1.05 per Barrel Tax) that will provide yet more revenues to promote yet more tourism, in an infinite money feedback loop! Can diversify the local economy by buying everyone in Hawai'i a truck with 10mpg, which also provides yet more revenue with every mile driven at 5mph on Hawai'i highways each day. Progress and a rising tide that lifts all Yotas!

A few things to relate:

1. a random old local dude struck up a conversation with me at the Safeway gas pump in Hilo, asking why prices don't go down when oil goes down. I guess ordinary people are thinking about these things too, not just us keyboard jockeys.

2. Both Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab straits are being attacked again, so expect the gas that never really went down in price here to go up again.

3. First Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii died in the Iran war. I think that is our first casualty from Hawaii. He was killed inside an American base in Jordan, which the mightiest and most expensive military in the world was not able to defend.
