How many millions do you think the legislature is going to send here to watch it go up in smoke.
Shouldn’t they say that rather than appropriate millions and millions for studies, plans, consultants? For projects that never get built, but then get resurrected with another round of funding for Puna bypass roads, etc? The legislature doesn’t mind spending money for Puna, as long as it’s spent on Oahu.

And that is the point, isn't it? Along with how many Punatics would be able to afford to live in Hawaii if it wasn't for the same?
But still they can dream.
In terms of dreaming.. recently I saw a bumper sticker which said something like.. "A third road for Waikoloa" and I thought how cool.. they're already bucking for a third.. whereas all of Puna... lol! Though, I'll admit when I researched it the answer is a bit more nuanced.. they're asking for a third emergency egress.. but still, while reminding me how little the legislature is going to give Puna no matter who asks, it tickled me.
As to Jules often cited..
Anybody know what Greggor has/will do? Outside of his normally stated "as long as it's done right" politician comment?
I don't see a problem with Greggor saying that at all. And wonder, what else is there to say? I too don't have a problem with geothermal "as long as it's done right" and think PGV is doing it right. I also hope DHHL goes ahead with their plans for all the islands as well... and think throwing them a few mil to get the project jump started is a great idea. I'd certainly vote for a guy that would vote for that.

But we dumped 9 million into the ocean. Up in smoke vs swimming with the fishes, I guess!

This is my DRAFT statement on PGV after significant dialogue with the community and various people who have followed this plant and its issues for many years.
Please let me know your thoughts in terms of errors, oversights, etc.
I'm genuinely interested in your feedback.
Here's the quick summary:
▪ We need to hold PGV accountable — after decades of it getting a free pass, time and time again.
▪ This is a pocketbook issue, not just a Puna issue. You do not have to live within a mile of the plant to pay for it. Every household on this island pays for PGV on its electric bill — about 15–20¢ per kilowatt-hour all-in, against 8–9¢ for the solar-plus-storage we should be building instead.
▪ Thirty years and about $100,000 in fines. A $23,700 state penalty and a $76,500 federal one — at a plant that will collect $28.2 million a year through 2052. That is not accountability. It is a rounding error.
▪ A higher bar. PGV will probably serve our grid for many more years. It must finally meet binding emissions limits, real-time public monitoring, funded enforcement, host-community authority, and aquifer protection.
▪ No further expansion, and no new drilling in Lava Zone 1. Beyond the repower regulators have already approved, new generation on this island should be solar, wind, and storage — cheaper, safer, cleaner, and not sitting on an active rift zone.
▪ Stop spending public money to prove the resource. $15 million requested for exploration on DHHL lands, and $40–50 million in proposed test drilling, are dollars that could go to Hawaiian homestead allocations, roads, and classrooms.

Welcome to PunaWeb Tam! Good luck on your campaign! It's refreshing to see someone from Puna actually trying to do something for Puna!

That would most certainly be refreshing!

Personally I know precisely nothing about Tam but welcome him here.Am I correct that he is running for district office?
May I suggest he open a new topic in Puna Politics where he can start afresh and field questions.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Accountable for what exactly, and in what form?
Every household on the grid also pays for power generated by wind, solar and diesel, I believe. That's Hawaiian Electric's integrated grid system. Electricity from the Waikoloa solar farm is currently sold at 9 cents KWH, so how could solar plus the extra cost of storage come in at the same rate?
Where do you envision new solar farms plus storage being built?
Edit: Oops. If you want to move this somewhere else Rob then go right ahead.

It's under the politics board:

ETA: this link is somewhat less useful now that the post itself has been moved to the politics board. ^_^
