Pohoiki
#31
Empathy.. or the lack thereof.

On the one hand, I’ve often read how important it is to live with, and respect Pele.  No lava diversions, clean house before she arrives, welcome her in and the changes she brings.

At Pohoiki, the hot pond people accept the changed shape and features of the coastline after the lava flow, they dance in the new sand that Pele has created.  Others want to spend tens of millions to try and return the area to what it probably will never be again.

Who is right in this turn of events?

"That money would have been spent anyway"

Yeah, maybe it could have been spent on something better. Instead of millions going to some company to play in the sand for a few weeks on a project expected to fail.

They would have done better to make the channel in the newly created lava rock.

This is part of the fishing boats vs hot ponds debate that has arisen over the years, which Tam filed a lawsuit against DLNR & FEMA to stop the use of the dredging materials to fill in the warm ponds along the back edge of Pohoiki (some of the legal stuff here about a lack of standing, Tam's version and Pohoiki plans here).

I can see how those who want to open the boat ramp could be perturbed by having those long-delayed efforts being dragged into court and impacting the whole project.

Damn, if only Pele was on the ballot!

I have always been for the recognition of her good works... as yak is often reminding us, what's wrong with recognizing we live on an active volcano? And still, I have often wondered at the dichotomy between her followers practice of respect when it suits and blatant disrespect when it doesn't. But ain't that the case with all 'true' believers? God's always on their side no matter.

For me, the filling in of Pohoiki bay was/is a golden opportunity to have a brand new beach and scrap a third rate boat ramp for a top shelf one with all the amenities. A chance to dream big enough to create a really good future. At some point back in the day I explained what I think is the best path forward here.

But that's not how the human mind works. There's comfort in how it used to be.. and fear of the unknown possibilities of how it might become. Which isn't really suited for living on an active volcano.

aloha puna poser Leila....
to A your low IQ ignorant reeetarded maga-ike Q....
"...If anyone wants to play the blame game, I suggest you contact Governor Green and ask him where our $30 million dollars went that was promised to our Puna ʻOhana and Lawaiʻa to restore our lifeline and access to our ocean at Pohoiki...." - Leila

it takes 3 seconds... duh duh duh

The original, larger $35 million to $40 million plans to clear Pohoiki Bay were scaled back to a $9 million localized dredging project due to statewide revenue shortfalls and budget cuts. The initial $5.4 million in state funds secured by local representatives, supplemented by $3 million from the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) special fund, went directly toward excavating volcanic sand and debris

IOW. blame PedophileTRUMP! duh duh

Kehena Beach was made literally in the 1960 Eruption..... and had 20X more sand that you see there today.
I have many photos from 1965....
the black sand beach was 3X long and 5X wider than today and prob 10'-15'' thicker in sand..
so it took 60+ years for all the black sand to get washed too deep where it WILL NOT be washed back to shore again during a large storm...

Black Sand Beaches only last 10-60 years in Hawaii! period!.......
it's always been that way.... black sand need be regenerated with active hot lava hitting salt water and fracturing.......
unlike white sand beaches which are really just Parrot Fish poop beaches w/ new sand being added 24/7/365

Speaking for those who are NOT low IQ ignorant reeetarded maga-ike PedophileTRUMP! lovers, I see we are now at the point of debating what the "fishermen" want versus the "dancing around barefoot on the lava hotponders" want.

If one took any time to read and comprehend the realities as to what the current political efforts are for who wants what at Pohoiki, all one needs to do is read what Tam has DONE and SAID. Three easy ways that I quickly found:

What’s pono for Pohoiki?. Pohoiki Bay and the state park on the… | by Tam Hunt | Medium

A Vision for Pohoiki and Isaac Hale Beach Park | by Tam Hunt | Medium

Where do we go now on Pohoiki?. Rep. Ilagan is touting $1 million… | by Tam Hunt | Jul, 2026 | Medium

Sounds like reasoned approaches to not only have a functioning boat launch for our Puna fishermen but keep the newly formed hot ponds.

And being clear, Tam's lawsuit was dismissed in part because the state had permanently abandoned its plans to fill the hot ponds, thus, the court ruled that his lawsuit for injunction to stop the filling of all 8 of the newly formed hot ponds was irrelevant. Although, the State did take out the most favorite formed hot pond anyway, but left the remaining 7, due, in part to Tam's initial lawsuit as well as tremendous community support to keep these newly formed hot ponds.

As they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. It seems to me, the choice for District 4 representative is very clear.

Greggor wants another study.

(In memory of George - in more ways than one!)

duh duh....

And here we thought you were just pretending to be a reeeeeeetard.  You should have made your search 4 seconds or more duh duh duh and you would have learned (assuming the capability is present) that Josh "Fake-Shake" Green jammed the Kanaka just trying to subsist in 2023.  When Autopenus Maximus was still gearing up for four more non compos mentis (like the duhmeister) years - and old "Fake-Shake" Green line item vetoed parts of House Bill 300, cutting the funds to do Pohoiki correctly.  I don't know which of you is more taaaaarded.  Duh duh.  So while you probably blame The Orange He'e for all of your several dysfunctions, like most of your nonsense, you would be wrong, again, duh duh duh.  Try abrain!
