Hurricane season 2026
Today Durgin mentioned there is another area of possible trouble:

"...The NHC is keeping an eye on an area of possible tropical development to our southeast. The European model has be showing low shear over this region for a couple of days and now the GFS is moving towards a similar solution with divergent flow over the same area Lala came from.

It is unusual to see so much activity near 135W, but high sea surface temperatures have put us at higher risk."

Partial recording of Gov Green & Mayor Alameda's afternoon press conference today. Quick highlights: 1 confirmed death in the Na'alehu area, Big Island schools and County facilities to remain closed on Tuesday, rest of state offices and schools opening tomorrow, roads and bridges to Ka'u in better shape than initially thought as the debris gets cleared. Some other details about recovery in there as well.

Blah-blah yada-yada?

Has there been any *meaningful* info released? Any truly rapid response?

Oh. Sorry. There I am being all Pollyanna.

Got a good friend who takes care of an off-grid farm down Wai'ōhinu way...they are pretty much screwed. Cut off from everything in either direction, toward Păhala or HOVE. Today is their birthday. Seeing pics of Na'alehu and such are sobering. Guess they should celebrate they and their farm surviving? Bake themselves a cake?

Just wanted to put that out there.

We all got off pretty lucky around here.

Power restored in our patch of central HPP in the last half hour. We are amazed and thankful for our good fortune.

Wishing the same for everyone very soon.

Still waiting in lower HPP (5th street). But having a portable generator backup is making things manageable.

Edge - I probably should have specified ECMWF is still my personal champ. Based on my preferences, criteria, and requirements.
Fair enough - just figured the storm was a useful test case to compare the various strengths and weaknesses of the models available. Also sounds like we share a similar timeline in terms of ears perking up at 7+ days out, closely watching at 3 days out, and finalizing any last minute work at 2 days out.

In that spirit, like Durian Fiend said, meteorological folks and models are already starting to give the side-eye to some possible storm action heading our way through the next week or two.

Yep, keep an eye out.  For what it’s worth, yellow symbol is ECMWF single best estimate, orange dots  ECMWF models, blue dots Google WeatherNet models.  Moving farther ahead in time the cyclone reverts to a low, and system stays to the south.  Yes, no, maybe?

Hurricane names. If the storm forms in the Eastern North Pacific it is named from a different list than if it forms in the Central Pacific. Next up on the Eastern North Pacific list - - Iselle.

From the NYT:

There are separate lists for different regions of the world where tropical storms develop. In the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific, alphabetical lists of alternating male and female names are recycled every six years. The 2026 list will pop up again in 2032, for example.

Tropical storms that develop in the Central Pacific, as Lala did on Thursday, are assigned Hawaiian names.

The list continues from one season to the next until it ends, and then a new list comes into play.

HECO's new restoration map says power for 95% of Puna will be restored by end of day Sunday, August 23rd, so hopefully that's the longest that most people in Puna will have to wait, with many coming back online between now and then.
