Hey All, I've been buying the Fresh Frozen Ahi from the local grocery in Hilo. Not going to say the name but everyone knows the one at Puainako. I've read that the Vietnamese Tuna is treated with Carbon Monoxide and may have been handled improperly.
I've never gotten sick tho. It's half the price of fresh local Ahi. I was wondering if anyone else was buying it? Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for replies. Aloha KW

What do you mean by handled improperly? My thought is: It's probably fine but I am not interested in buying it.

Buy local. If it's expensive, I just buy less ahi and don't go near the imported stuff. What is the source for the "may have been handled improperly?

Source is Google AI. Mishandled in that AI mode stated that Vietnam lacks proper freezing processes for sushi grade fish. Could be injected with saline, beet juice for color and other things. I think I'm done with getting it. Bummer. It tastes good.

Interesting read on the Carbon Monoxide Treatment of tuna:
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Treatment in Tuna — What It Is, Why Japan Banned It — Sashimi DC
Also, interesting that Japan, along with the European Union and Canada, prohibits the practice and importation of carbon monoxide treated tuna because carbon monoxide locks in a false red color indefinitely meaning a piece of fish can look "freshly caught" long after it has actually degraded or spoiled, but its okie dokey here in Hawaii and the rest of the good ole US of A. But that red dye in skittles is off limits!
This topic takes me back to my early High School days in the 70's and at MANDATORY for girls' etiquette and dining class and our teacher, Mrs. Leopold, saying, "If your date/husband takes you to a steak restaurant, DO NOT order seafood. If he takes you to a seafood restaurant, DO NOT order steak!"
I'd add to Mrs. Leopold's wisdom, if in Hawaii, eat Hawaii tuna!

Nobody bothered by the amount of Mercury in that Tuna you are eating. You're not supposed to eat more than 1/2 pound anyway.
FYI, most meat in the USA is treated with CO or some other gas to keep it nice and red looking.

While the USDA does allow the sale of CO treated meat and fish, most major US retailers do not sell it.
Meat/fish in the normal meat counters that is. The frozen packaged meat in the freezer is anybody's guess, however.
