THE BLOVIATING DUDE SAYS:
The mere fact of you going to Google AI to know anything about VA care, says it all. You know nothing.
Oh really? I know nothing because I used 'the Google AI?"
Tell me, was it the question I asked or the answer it gave, complete with links to Civil Beat, Big Island Now and Stars and Stripes articles that makes me know nothing?
Just saying stuff (WHICH YOU EXCEL AT) or telling a story of what one or two family members or friends experienced, does not make it true nor does it automatically apply to the masses equally. Read the Civil Beat link. Read the Big Island Now link. Read the Stars and Stripes link.
Our Veterans Health Care system SUCKS both nationwide and especially here in Hawaii. Easily researchable as fact, if you care to research anything.
As for knowing or not knowing something about the issue here, when you say "ANY vet should reach out to them for any sort of help" it shows you have no real understanding of the issue at all.

My personal opinion, as one with VA benefits, is that overall, in my personal, long term experience, The VA does as good a job as one can expect from government run health care in The USA, across every type of administration, congress, and court.

We don’t know if the deceased had PTSD, was satisfied with his veterans care or actually attacked the shooter as the man on 1.8 million bail has claimed. A whole lot of idle speculation here.

Too bad the quality of this program can’t be extended and provided for others? Especially with the dissatisfaction prevalent in private for profit health care systems. It works in almost every other 1st world country. With profit based healthcare it takes 6 months to get an appointment at the clinic in Pahoa. Does that sound like a fully functional system?

More to the point.. with profit based healthcare someone, whose motive is their profits, is always measuring your healthcare against their profits. Does that sound like a fully functional system?
I've heard some pretty scary stuff about every provider. The Hilo Medical Center sure has their share.. the VA their's. I could cite reams of horror stories about the Bay Clinic. Even North Hawaii has some skeletons in their closet... and they're often held up as the best we got.
Still, single payer is the only sane way to run healthcare.. and yet, god forbid we ever have it run by anything close to the way the feds run our government today.

Our family has always received exceptional care in the Pahoa Clinic and I'm not aware of long wait times. They have been extremely responsive to the point of lifesaving at times. Similarly I and we have experienced exceptional service at the Hilo Medical Center. I have heard complaints over the years but have never experienced any sub par care there.
Not trying to be argumentative. Just adding a degree of praise where I think it is due.

The Pahoa Medical Center has always been great when I have gone there.
My wife had her primary care there.
I have experienced 1st class care at HMC as well as the care they gave my wife.

My friend needed to reschedule her yearly checkups twice over the last 4 or 5 years, the earliest appointments in both cases were six months in the future. This also affected how her insurance covered bloodwork etc. Some visits and their related expenses are only covered once in a yearly cycle. That’s related more to the insurance company than to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the clinic. She likes her doctor and the staff, unfortunately they are exceptionally busy and in the case of a non emergency or visits that are not time sensitive, there are a limited number of appointments available.

I've had both the best and the worst doctors I've ever had at what was at the time called the Bay Clinic, in Pahoa. I knew both its founders, one a true saint of a medical practitioner and the other who eventually robbed the till, packed up her stuff and left the islands in the night.
I have friends whose live's were saved at the Hilo Medical Center, and another whose brain was cut open unnecessarily and had to be rushed off island to fix the botched job that almost cost him his life.
I know a woman whose life was shattered by an OBGYN in Waimea who otherwise delivered hundreds of babies and every one of their mothers sings her praise.
I am sure, positive, there are both the best, and the worst, in all medical facilities. I also think medicine, as a science, is in its infancy. And, in reality, we're all guinea pigs being practiced upon..
