Well, now there's a new plan. The whole idea of geese is someone in the back yard to quietly eat the grass. Some folks have said sheep and goats can be quiet noisy at times. Geese and ducks are supposed to be real good at eating grass and geese are supposed to be entirely vegetarian so I figured they would be the best choice. However, I met a fellow last Saturday who has had geese as well as guinea hens and he said geese were louder than guineas. Ack! The neighbors would be definitely less than pleased if geese are louder than guineas.
Now the new plan is to trade the guinea hen for a pair of ducks. They are a mallard/khaki campbell cross, but they should still eat the grass and hopefully quietly. Anyone else have any good ideas on how to have someone else do the lawn?

what's the phobia with eating the eggs though? wait till those kids see those Easter goose eggs!

when you ship with an ag permit, the inspection goes on easily in honolulu through your carrier and then on to you, you dont have to be there or anything.. i have shipped koi this way, pretty simple.

According to the geese folks, they have to ship the geese to Honolulu where they get inspected. They ship via air freight and someone has to go get the geese from the air freight office, take it to the inspection station and then ship them on to this island. The costs have been racking up, just the air freight is estimated around $150 !!! Sigh!
We hatched the guinea hen out with some chicken eggs but she (he?) is a really loud bird! We may have roast guinea sometime soon if Speckles gets any louder.
Anyone have any ideas on quiet ways to get rid of grass?

hello again, i use fedex to ship koi very heavy with water and all. and again, you dont have to be in honolulu for inspection, just pick up at fedex at their terminal on old airport road...you might check their prices, need aprox size, weight of box. if you dont eat your quinne hen i would love her...linnette

What with the shipping charges along with the price of the goslings themselves as well as the conversation with someone who said they were noiser than Speckles the guinea hen, I think the goose project has been cancelled. Maybe I can borrow some goats or sheep for a couple weeks and see if they can eat all the grass.
Well, Speckles is a noisy pest, but she's kinda a cute noisy pest and my DH likes to watch her spazz around the yard so she (he?) will probably continue to be in the back yard. Even if we wanted to give her away, she would have to be caught first and I haven't a clue how that would work since she is either running across the yard or up in the avocado tree.
Someone told me there was a flock of guineas up the mountain a bit, maybe they will naturalize and we will have guineas everywhere. They are really tasty to eat even if they are noisy.
