Punapetah,

I have read the flack you have taken, and unrightfully so. It is much better to be involved and get flack , than sit on the sidelines and throw the flack.

While I am not a resident of HPP, many on this board are. Good Luck to you !!

I can't quite figure out what you are trying to say here.

1. Has someone been "robbed" (had a personal possession taken away by force or fear).
2. Are you referring to a burglary, or a problem with burglaries perhaps?
3. Are you trying to get more police attention for crimes in HPP?
4 Who is Safarrik?
5. What funds were promised to Safarrik?
6. Are you being discouraged from getting involved in some way?

I have a residence in HPP. A hui hou.

This is a very frustrating process....i symphatise that HPP residents are being targeted along with other communities....wish you good luck in the outcome and hope you get your funding that you were promised.

It would be nice to have some support from the local government on all the rampant stealing going on of raw materials and what not...

Noel, not sure if this is the issue, but the HPP Neighborhood Watch was to get money from the Hawaii County council for operation & equipment expense last year. That money never materialized.

Glen, although I am no expert on such things, I will try to answer your questions.

1. and 2. Burglary is the issue. Although robberies have occurred in the past, they are extremely rare.

3. Yes, many in HPP feel that police protection is not adequate. You could also say that about a lot of other places in Puna.

4. Gary Safarik is the previous Puna rep on the County Council.

5. Funds were promised BY Mr. Safarik.

6. Lots of people are discouraged by the lack of attention to Puna's service and infrastructure needs, but I am not aware of any effort to discourage participation.

By the way, I hope your palapa and dolphin statue are permanently fixed features and not portable. Water pumps are a popular theft item, but at least we know yours won't get stolen, given its unusual configuration.

Cheerfully wishing you and your property the best,
Jerry

Yes, I have heard about the water pump issues. It is disturbing. And yes, the pump is in the catchment tank which is under the patio. Yes, I've thought about the dolphins..... and other things. At some point, we may need to go, ugh, private with our security needs, because I understand burglary is widespread. I also understand that people will take anything that isn't tied down. That is a real shame. The crime rate in Hawaii is actually higher than any other state in that regard. It's gotta stop.

Is there some sort of crime map? That would be useful.

In my "dream HPP", there is a little town center with a boutique police station.

I applaud and support any efforts to address burglary and larceny. My neighbor told me that her lawnmower was removed IN HER PRESENCE. That's unbelieveable.

All I can think of to do is to map the crimes, have an effective neighborhood watch, and raise a ruckus until we get police support. Unfortunately, police are often diverted to other matters.

This is why I first posted on Punaweb. I just spent a couple hours reading all about "you" theft victims from the recent past few years. We've been complaining about the thefts and ilegal dumping and general just open lawlessness in HPP. You can drive up any street (18th) and pick out the crack houses. A friend build some houses on my street and the burglars were on their 2nd trip with the side by side refer. in the garage when interrupted by the real estate agent. The 1st trip they took the range. Friday the guy across the street had his crotchrocket stolen but it was most likely one of his crackhead friends. As Puna PD calls them "frienamies". First they were your friend , now they're your enemy. The local cops are complacent and you aren't gonna get much more than a police report, you'll have to pay for. All the reasons/excuses aren't gonna get your wedding ring(malissa), or your rifes(Henry), or motorcycle (Ron), or moped(Mikey) or range (Tim), computers(Saunna) and that was just my street until this summer.
I went door to door to meet all these new people moving in, (like a lot of you guys planning the move) to see if they were interested in creating a neighbor Watch, not asking to watch the whole hood just our street.
I got a dozen houses on a mile street to write me a check and say yes.
So I designed, ordered and bought our signs and are connected to each other on our block by phone and computer. We all have each other's and can reach everyone instantly IM.
Some have cameras. Most have dogs.

Hawaii is a beautiful place and you can get lost in it's bliss and the true Aloha that does exhist. But unfortunately a lot of people are be pushed out and as they go they're gonna take your stuff with them. I've run off squatters living under a tree, smelly pee papers everywhere on the same block where 5-6 brand new houses have just filled with residents. Was wondering if I should invite them to the Neighbor Watch meetings? After all they'd been living there awhile. peeeuww

So as many of you are or will be HPP residents, how are in the HPPNW?
Who wants to be?

punapetah,
I don't currently live in HPP, but I own two lots on Ava St. that I hope to build on, Pele permitting. I applaud your efforts and will be joining your cause when I get there. I'm willing to help any way I can, long distance. Has anyone considered an increase in association dues to cover the cost of contracting with the PD to provide an officer that would be dedicated to HPP? That is fairly common in some areas. I believe HPP is large enough that each lot owners share would be reasonable. Unfortunately, with my owning two lots, I would get to pay twice. The only issue is monitoring to make sure you get what you are paying for, as it is always tempting for the agency to use the contract officer elsewhere when manpower is short.

HPP has 137 miles on road within the development. To have one car patroling would be close to what we have now, nothing. What's really needed is for HPP to incorporate and we establish our own police department. When HPP is full all 8800 lots you can be sure all the other smaller subdivisions will be built out. And if they haven't built a full station in the middle of HPP there's gonna be roits. population will 10k or more and Keaau won't be able to handle what they can't do now.
Off duty cops hire out for road construction. I know in New Orleans we'd hire em for bar security. But that's covered in the door charge, who's gonna take up the collection for a patrol.
Let me tell you about HPP NW, I'm the Treasurer and there is no money. The original post was to try to get some new people to show up. i don't think any did.
HPP is the second largest subdivision, behind Oceanview, in the U.S. Yet we've no police station c;oser than 5 miles away. That's why the burglars are so bold knowing there's only 4-5 cops on duty on the road at any time to cover all of Puna. As they mostly travel alone in their cars, backup takes all the cars to one spot. It's like the robbers got the cops running back and forth. I'm not exagerating, Malissa on my block was robbed 3 times. erd time she chased the punk kids down her driveway with a machete. Still even after they were caught comming out of Ainaloa, (they had to go rob someone else to get their crack money) they cops never followed up with the reports, no case, no court, robbers go free....again. 6 people on my street have been robbed and that's not counting the guy living in the container across the street because he's nut's and when off his meds you can't tell if he's full of beans. Anyway, can't wait to have more people willin to get involved.
