I love going to the japanese restaurant on the water in downtown hilo by the park...(can't remember the name) its cool haning out there during sunset and seeing/hearing all the planes landing and the bento boxes are really ono and inexpensive.

Can't wait to hear about other places that i would like to check out from your postings.

I have always thought that Lupins had pretty good food. Sometime the tables weren't that clean, but the food was good!

While no longer a dive, the old Verna's in Kalapana, now the Kalapana Cafe is ono and very reasonably priced and the view can't be beat!

Not really a dive, but the fish store at Pahoa Marketplace has ono fishfry - ahi and fries with malt vinegar! Yummy. More of a order and eat it outside or take home, although they have a new counter to sit at since Pahoa Realty moved across to the new building.

It's always hot and crispy and tarter sauce is really good, but the coleslaw leaves much to be desired.

Paradise Bar & Grill has good burgers and one of the few places in Puna for live music.

Hey Lee, I co-sign about Paradise. Hit that place every time I do laundry.

Paolo's is one of the best restaurants on the whole island. The Thai place is pretty good in Pahoa too. Pescatore and Puka Puka Kitchen in Hilo and Donna's Smokin' BBQ in Keaau are my favorites. Of course I always stuff myself with food at the Makuu Market too. Smile

Koa Cafe in Mountain View -

$10 / Broke da mouth steak and salad. Kailua Pork is good, and Corned beef and cabbage! Portugese bean soup, yum!

Deserts are okay - cheesecakes - but if Dan's wife a desert - Watch out! its probably sinfully good.
