What's this growing in my dirt?

I have these hollowed out Mushroom-looking stuff growing in my dirt. (I'll try to repost the picture.) Does it affect the soil positively or adversely? Just curious.

Here's another stinkhorn that we found on Maui a few years ago. Sort of an alien creature appearance. We're starting to see them pop up recently here in Puna also.
