Whew. Y'know, since assuming the worst (rather than assuming the best, as Rob likes to say) seems to be the order of the day these days, I think I'll just hijack this thread entirely and post a marvelous poem by Rudyard Kipling, jungle-lover extraordinaire.

I spell America "AmeriKKKA". I play the "game" to get ahead. I went to school, paid my dues(still am)and love my family. I was born in Hilo but I made the "choice" to leave to find a "better life". I didn't want to kiss ass to get a job at KTA or NAPA auto parts to squeak by on minimum wage. I wanted to be comfortable and enjoy some of the comforts in this world. Hilo doesn't have tons of jobs or careers that pay enough to have a comfortable living. I've traveled all over the world and have lived in 4th world countries(exagerating a bit). People talk about "volunteering" like it makes them a "God". Sorry I dont want to wonder how I'm going to feed my kids tonight, sorry, I want running water in my house, sorry, I want to drive on a paved road, sorry, I actually want the police to respond quickly when I call, Sorry, I want more firemen and EMT's, sorry, I don't feed into the "good ole boy" mentality, sorry, I dont want to get "price raped" at stores, sorry, I dont want my kid to get pounded on and their skull split open at school while the teacher stands by and goes "ahh kids will be kids", sorry, I expect to get county services(after paying for them) sorry, I think termite rotted buildings need to be removed, sorry, I'm not cool with graft and corruption on every level of government. SORRY ! but guess what ? I'm coming back HOME ! and when I do, I'm not gonna be "sorry" anymore. It really seems like people are jealous on this forum.

It really makes me laugh when people jump on this board and spew all this "no development/ no paving mentality and then they breed unchecked and overpopulate the world with a house full of kids they can't afford to raise. I agree. You've got aloha in your heart, there somewhere, petah, but it's not getting out well, at least in the last several days. Earlier on, it seems, you had a softer touch. I respect your deep concerns about Puna and it's future, and I appreciate your contact with all things Hawaiian.

In my experience, it is sometimes surprising how intelligent and well-read people are. It's easy for me to see what goes on around me, then think, what, are they stupid? But when you get to know somebody, most people really are bright and well-informed, and there's usually one or two stray interests that most people have explored to the PhD level. It might be art, gardening, saltwater aquaria, kite flying, or whatever, but I've learned that it's easy to underestimate people, in general. And I'm only speaking for myself.

Most people have political views, also. They may not share them publicly, but the views are there nonetheless. I know I've pissed off at least a few of you by making one of my political views known, but the opposition is not unanimous, and it's not uniformly targeted on point, either. I'm okay with that. We are all entitled to our views, and express them without fear of retribution; it's what makes us Amerikan.

For me, communication with others is good. Dialogue is good. Debate is marginal, and argument is no good. I'm just not cut out for elevated adrenaline levels, in spite of my profession. I won't accuse you of being "holier-than-thou", petah, although in some of your posts, you come across that way. I don't know, but I think you're not trying to see from the other person's point of view. Native American advice: walk a mile in my moccasins.

We're all bright people, we all have points of view, and I try to respect differences of opinion. If the differences are irreconcilable, well, there's no point in arguing. I make my political views known at the polling place.

How do I know?

Do you guys not recycle tires there? Just peeked my curiosity. We have many of our streets paved over with that material (the freeways in particular) so that it quiets the traffic. I live in the Phoenix area, fyi. Also, aren't those used to make new tires? Or some people even use them to make homes out of. What a shame if you don't do that.

Unfortunately they don’t add any recycled material in the hot mix asphalt on this side of the island.
I can’t speak for Kona but I can tell you they don’t do it here in Hilo.
Not only can tires be used in the mix but crushed glass and milled asphalt from old roads. Asphalt is one product that is 100% recyclable. Even the State and County contracts call for the base course to have the glass additive if possible. Many metropolitan areas on the mainland all use some type of recycled material in the asphalt.
1. The process requires the plants to add additional equipment to batch any of the aforementioned recyclable into the hot mix.
2. I’m told that we (The BI) don’t produce enough of any of the materials to make it profitable for the plants to add the required equipment.
3. Who pays for the cost to collect, store and transport the material to the plants?
I think the responsibility is up to the government to REQUIRE that the additional recycled material be added.
Give the plants a time frame to get geared up and start using some of these materials in our roads.

When new tires are purchased you pay a recycle fee, per tire here. Those fees are used to store, transport and re use the tires. The fee is $1.00 per tire and proposed to go up to $1.75 in the near future. Also car batteries have a core charge and when you buy a new one your old one is taken back and restored.

Of course not all tires get recycled, but less and less turn up on the side of the road, in creeks and water ways or dumped on someones property.
