I figure since we're closing this week on our property, now is a good time to introduce myself! I moved to Oahu 10 years ago with the military, and decided to stay; my husband and I have been celebrating Christmas in Volcano every year for the last 8 years, so when we decided to buy some land, the only decision was what part of Puna would we call home? After a fun process of elimination, we decided on Fern Acres.

I'm a civil engineer working as a construction manager on road projects: if it's asphalt or concrete, love it. Buildings, not so much, but having grown up in a 200 year old farmhouse with no brothers, I at least know the basics. On Oahu, I've avoided the whole home maintenance thing by living on a sailboat.

We don't plan on building for 8-10 years, but will spend the meantime getting to know our piece of dirt (or rather rocks and ferns) and slowly hand clearing enough to get the lay of the land. Been lurking for months, and the Punaweb ohana has been a huge help in our decision making process- a big MAHALO to you all!!

Aloha Joelle,

The official welcoming committee must be cooking tomorrow's feast, so I'd like to say welcome to the PW to Joelle and hubby!

So sounds like you know the Volcano area pretty well.

Have fun here with our group of eclectics! Ask what you will and share what you know, or think you know! LOL

Happy Thanksgiving too.

Aloha,

I guess it's time to say hello. I currently live on the island of Oahu. My wife and I are closing on a house in HPP in the beginning of January. We currently own a plant nursery on Oahu and are looking forward to a new direction in our lives. I've been reading some of the forums here on Punaweb for the last few weeks and look forward to contributing whatever I am able. We look forward to meeting some of you when we arrive.

Aloha,

I am Sharlee and my hubby is Darin and we will be bringing our 15 year old daughter, Ariel. We will be headed over for two weeks in March to look at land and such. Can't wait! and plan to move in June or July.

I just got done doing a big post on my blog about the hows and whys of my family and I moving to Hawaii. I will just direct you there if you care to know. http://dreamsofhawaii.blogspot.com/

Who are we? Well, we are two people that have determined to not let life live us. We want to live life and have found that difficult to do here in Oregon. I lived on Oahu for four years as a little girl.
After a series of events and whatever-you-call-ems, Hawaii just started calling me home and Dar and Ariel heard it too.

We find ourselves in transition and it being a perfect time to take a leap into the realm of bliss. Darin is by profession an electrician, but has been working with his dad for the last 5 years installing satallites on million dollar RVs. For the last year it has become clear that he was created to be an electrician and that is what he must do if he is to be happy.

I have been a professional mediator for the last eight years and am currently the executive director of Linn-Benton Mediation Services, a non-profit. I love mediation and I am really great at the administration, but my type-A personality would drive me to workaholism that is completely against my value system. The demands of this job are taking me out on nights and weekends as well and has just encroached on our lifestyle to an unacceptable degree. My 15 year old is my last munchkin at home and she needs Mama.

So, we have decided to move to a place that supports our values. Family, people, relationships, community and creativity.

We dream of building our own home. I love building and power tools. Ariel takes after me in that area, so all three of us would be involved in creating our life. She wants wood flooring and I want tile. We will see what happens.

I am excited to get to know everyone over the next few months and look forward to meeting you in March (only two and a half months away and counting!).

Aloha,
Sharlee

So here it goes, my introduction...

My name is Tom and I am married for 12 years to my Highschool Sweetheart, Pam. We have 2 beautiful Daughters, Sally 10 and Hayley 7. I am born and raised in Southern California and my wife is from Northern California. If you had ever asked me a couple of years ago if I would every leave Cali I would have told you that it would take an "act of God". My family is all here and it is my home. And then I went to Hawaii...
Last year, I began to feel the urge to start living my dreams, and not letting life live me. I told my wife that I wanted to move to Hawaii. She, at first, thoguht I was crazy, but smiled and supported me as she always does. As we began to research, we realized that Oahu was not where we wanted to be. I had thought that it would be easy to find a job there, because it is the big city. I work in Retail and there are lots of Malls on Oahu. But again, it was just like here, in our minds. And so we began to look at other Islands. And then we found the Big Island. And then we found Puna, and it was like our home calling us.
As we talked and prayed about it, we relized that it was where we want to be, living life to the fullest with our girls. I actually got a job offer in October which I ended up turning down because it just wasn't right. We talked, prayed, and waited some more which brings us to today. We are now listing our house for sale in So. Cal. and moving to the Big Island. I think we want to move to HPP, but we will rent for a while once we get there to look around and make sure that we are where we want to be before we buy. I have to say that the Lava zone thing freaks me out a little. HPP is in Lava zone 3, and we are feeling pretty secure about that.
We want to be an contributing part of the community that we live in as we are now. We are very involved in our Church and School. I thought I may as well get started early! and am so excited to have found this forum to meet people and learn new things about the place that we will call home.

Aloha everyone!

My name is Kim and my husband Marcus and I just moved to HPP this fall. We fell in love with the islands and felt the irresistible call when we visited Kauai and Oahu in February of 2007. A matter of months later, we left our long time home of Portland, Oregon. This was a big leap of faith for us and we are still in amazement about how smoothly everything has worked out.

We are both fortunate enough to be working remotely for our Oregon employers at this time, which has made for a wonderfully soft landing. Marcus is a software engineer and I am a public health researcher. We have two cat-kids -- Boo Boo and Seven - who love it here as well Smile

Right now we are looking for either a house to buy or a lot to build on and doing our research. I've been very grateful for the posters on the "building in puna" portion of this site and all of the insights they have shared.

Looking forward to meeting many of you in the future!

Best,

Kim
