but it is cheaper, all the way around, cheaper to hold the election, cheaper to fudge the numbers.

I would be happy to get either on-line or mail-in voting, but I have to say that my experience with the Pahoa walk-in facility was pleasant in both the primary and general elections. Friendly workers and minimal (or no) waiting made it a very positive experience.

Online, or computerized voting will leave the votes open to manipulation by most 13 year olds, not a good idea.

To have a vote that can be audited, there must be a physical paper trail. A computer could be used to make the choices, but a ballet with a preprinted serial number should be generated and placed in a locked container buy the voter with a duly appointed official watching and under the observation of poll watchers.

Any thing less will allow more of the voter fraud that is going on elsewhere in the country.

I'm one of those that think it should be a little inconvenient to vote. If you don't have enough interest to put up with a little inconvenience then you probably don't have enough interest to educate yourself on the issues. Obviously, allowances should be made for the physically infirm, etc.

The thumb dye works for part of it... but the recount can be a real pain if you have to count thumbs...

I hear ya. I write software and have no faith at all in electronic voting.

I think the individuals right to vote and the vote not be canceled out by fraud is so sacred that hard copy ballots must be used and the voter must show a govt issued photo ID.
In fact the voter registration card should be biometrically fool proof and include the finger print of the very died finger.

I voted by mail for many years in Oregon. It was particularly useful in a state with binding ballot measures, which are not just referendums. I would sit at the kitchen table and go through all the voter guides and my cheat sheets and fill out the ballot, then drive it down to county elections and drop it off when we were in town. Oregon has had excellent results with vote by mail: voter participation went up and fewer lame brained initiatives got passed because people had a chance to carefully read the initiative language and really think about them when they voted. No more troubles than any other voting system either, less than with electronic voting machines. Oregon made the switch when over 75% of the voters were using absentee ballots, more in rural areas.

Vote by mail IS NOT the same thing as online or electronic voting. I want a paper trail and vote by mail gives you that; one year the elections office even called me to verify my signature on the outside of the privacy envelope 3 days after I dropped my ballot off. I have to admit I never entrusted my vote to the USPS though.

I'd miss the social aspect at our polling place.
My biggest concern with the by mail is who is really voting? You can bet in some places it would be fill in the ballot as a group- disguised as "help" of course. How do you ensure the privacy of your vote? Have done absentee and like the convenience, but this could open whole new avenues of fraud.
